What do audiophiles want from a cable?
Cables essentially are tone controls. You are basically altering the lows, mids, and highs by trial and error. It just comes down to which one floats your boat in your room with your setup.
Finally stepping into the hobby after 30 years of watching from the sidelines
Costly indeed! I want the op to think about what he is doing and get a good nights sleep, after that if he still wants in we will have no choice but to allow it. This is usually granted on rare occasions but I don't think we will have a choice.
Finally stepping into the hobby after 30 years of watching from the sidelines
What took you so long? You must be very tired after watching from the sidelines for all that time. But I would definately go all out because you have 30 years to make up, good luck!
Best Preamp - NO preamp... (?)
Mitch2, thank you for taking the time to explain in detail the other variables involved and pointing out the genius behind Steve McCormacks designs which I believe are top notch!
Best Preamp - NO preamp... (?)
Passives of good quality are now being touted as being as good as very expensive active preamps if not better. Taking it one step further if your amp has sufficient gain, going direct can be surprisingly good but as you mentioned, you lose the abi...
Would you go all 1 brand for electronics?
inna, yes I looked into the Gamut Integrated you mentioned. It's a fine looking piece, bet it sounds excellent but I'm not interested in integrated amps. I'm sure if someone is trying to save space that could be the one.
Would you go all 1 brand for electronics?
Going all Audio Research is not a bad thing, in fact it's a sound investment having a good resale value, you can tell a lot of effort goes in to build quality both internally and externally.I always wanted to try Gamut products, tried many other b...
Does the heat an amp puts out have any effect on the sound quality ?
Class D certainly offers its own unique sound, runs very cool but my preference is more towards conventional designs. Anyway I think heat is good for transistors, as they warm up they sound better but definately not if they go into thermal run-away.
Review: Forte F-44 Preamplifier
I do understand this is an older thread and I understand as time goes on people's system's do evolve. However a very good design should be viable for years to come as does the Forte F44. Just recently purchased this pre and I can tell you it is on...
What in the world is going on.....
Yes I own some poor recordings both on CD and LP but I will still play them even if they don't bring my system to its full potential, I want to hear the music that they contain but still recognize that the system can and does sound better with qua...
What in the world is going on.....
This has been one of my complaints that as your system evolves (improves) some poor recordings sound worse but the good ones sound even better. That was the case for half the posters on one thread and the other half claim that all recordings impro...
basic passive preamp
Thank you George for the heads up on the op amps and if a upgrade there is still available it would be worth looking into.  Let me pull a statement from Stereophile worth repeating: "The task of the designer is to come up with a preamp circuit tha...
Retract offer
Yes, off the record you should be somewhat flexible as a seller. If someone makes me a formal offer and then sends me an email within 24 hours that they changed their mind or they made a mistake, I'm not going to force them to follow through with ...
basic passive preamp
I concur with the Mccormack Micro Line Drive preamp, own one and it is spectacular. The passive side provides dynamics like an active pre would deliver. The active side provides up to 12 db of gain and it is very good sounding as well. Steve's amp...
Quicksilver Remote Control Line stage. Need feedback from current or past owners
I owned a Quicksilver preamp and I can tell you that it is OK not very transparent or musical. I gave it a week but turned around and sold it. A friend of mine also owned one and he sold his too. But for what I understand the most current model ha...
