The Japanese electronics from the late 60’s -early 70s was inferior How about the V-Fets from Sony and Yamaha, they do not look so inferior sonicwise even by todays standards.
Dunlavy SC IV-A grills
My SC-III have it on both sides, supposed to be on both sides on IV’ s as well but not sure. You can experiment by listening either way. I prefer listening without the grilles attached.
Which preamps use 6922/6DJ8 tubes?
One way is to find a preamp which uses E88CC, many are going to recommend something nice and the list will grow, the other one is to get a preamp that uses different kind of tubes or no tubes at all and sell your NOS stock. Best is to listen what ...
Good cartridge for a Sony PS-LX5 with original headshell
I believe your arm has a usable cartridge weight range between 7,5-11,5 gr (including headshell). Whatever cartridge you choose make sure it has high compliance and is light, approx. or below 7 grams. Like, Audio Technica VM540ML, Goldring 2200, O...
Did the Old Receivers Sound Good?
I have the feeling that those old receivers are still wanted for reasons like, nostalgia, looks, plenty of frills but not for the so many zeros. Could still serve for a vintage second system though.

"High end" store snobbery
You can play smarter and present your Yamaha near the end of the trade leaving little space for them to think. Anyway bad service, but they are not the only ones, and it is strange for a smaller city.

Is a noisy tube a bad sounding tube
No, still can sound great, most 6922 tubes have an inherent noise, if it as max volume no worries.

Concerningly loud pops in vinyl playback
"Tubes in the ARC Ref 6 going bad. Maybe PSU tubes? But it really seems to be instigated by a volume level on the Ref 6 going above 40" A tube going bad and been upset by higher volumes.  It may go popping continuously.
