@rodman99999 Thank you for sending the link! I actually found that list embedded in another forum discussion. It’s why I picked the Tung Sols Halo Getters! I read the paragraph you mentioned; so interesting. And to think I stumbled upon it just to...
Which Preamp Tube is most consequential: Input or Gain
Hi @ghasley I got my info from tech support at Schiit (quote):L/R on the Freya is actually input/cathode follower and top/bottom is l/r. I’ll try to confirm, but so that means you were suggesting going with the input side -- which if the tech is r...

Thumbs up. Thanks.
Which Preamp Tube is most consequential: Input or Gain
@atmasphere and @lowrider57 Thanks for that. I know zilch about preamp design despite having tube gear for 40+ years. Isn't the input side a balancing and follower for gain? Why is the input the place to start? I'm seeing it play out in my roll, b...
Which Preamp Tube is most consequential: Input or Gain
Thanks, @lowrider57 , the Freya has two tubes per channel. Forward and rear are L/R channels; while the two left tubes are Input and two rights are Cathode follower. So I've been changing the two inputs or the two outputs to keep the channels the ...
Which Preamp Tube is most consequential: Input or Gain
Thanks @rickytickytwo . @ghasley The impact of the Tung-Sols on the right was much richer bass, on the left the bass seemed good but more in balance and everything else got nice and airy with good soundstage. So while rolling better tubes might no...
Which Preamp Tube is most consequential: Input or Gain
Thank you @ghasley . It's been hard to A/B test when I have to let the tubes cool, switch and try to remember what I heard! And @bigshutterbug per Schiit, L vs. R pairs of tubes on Freya are Input vs. Cathode follower.

Thanks, in process! Was wondering theoretically as much as anything.
Need DAC/Streaming Advice
I'm using a Mac Mini plus a USB DAC. I found the last Mini version with a DVD drive in it for $200. HiRes Downloads from tidal take 3 seconds.
Phono Preamp Gain
I tried all the recommended MM levels on my Schiit Mani and Freya with a Grado MM. Two levels sounded good. One was a better match for being similar to my digital rigs channel, so I'm using that. (I should note there was a distortion before the un...
Budget hi-fi and vintage audio gear
Vintage equipment in your budget is a hobby, or maybe a mindset. I have a Tandberg integrated TR-1055 that I bought used from a high-end shop 40 years ago. It sounds beautiful compared to a lot of current consumer things, but it's had quirky stuff...
Surprised at this Chinese powered speakers for peanuts...
An in-house R&D'd alternative is the powered sound from Adam Audio, a German company that specializes in state-of-the-art studio monitors. Their budget line hits a similar price point. They did the design in Berlin, basing it on their various ...

Ahhh--Problem solved. Adding a REL sub-bass unit...
I was using a pair of original Rogers LS3/5a with a Hafler SS or Marantz 8B tubes. There was no real bass without a sub. REL T2 was a gorgeous addition at a reasonable investment. I'm now using Adam Audio powered studio monitors (I always enjoy he...
