First Tube amp suggestions
The most expensive route will be trial and error, buying, selling returning etc. My advice would be to include the speakers into the decision making process and think of them as a system. Low power tubes will sound best on high efficiency speakers...
First Tube amp suggestions
The Black Ice amps, heck tube amps in general, may have many of the same issues, several of those you just described are mentioned in Black Ice’s Troubleshooting section of their website. It did look like there were responses from the manufacturer...
First Tube amp suggestions
Alot of recommendations for the Black Ice amps and I don't really understand why (perhaps being US designed?).  The only model in your price range is their entry level FX10 which won't have the power to properly drive your speakers.  Stretching th...
Suggestions please. Your favorite 3, 12ax7 tubes
Just get the most expensive tubes you can find, chances are they'll have the most effusive recommendations and largest cult following.  After you buy them you'll be able to post back here and find plenty of others that will agree with your purchas...
Leaving my amplifier on ok?
Most modern designs are going to have a standby mode where the component consumes very little power. Usually .5 watts or less.  It’s pretty apparent that they are intended to be in standby mode when not in use.  I noticed even holdouts like Naim h...
Advice on Speaker upgrade vs System Component Upgrade
I'd keep the HS in the office and upgrade the KEFs to the Olympica's.  They are absolutely gorgeous, I might change out my OG Contours with the Sonettas in my home theater just based on looks.  The HS is a near perfect bookshelf, I don't think ei...
My Heresy IV at 168 hours w/ a change of tubes.
The H4 is not a great all arounder and is very particular not only with gear and positioning, but also song selection. Some stuff sounds amazing, other stuff not so much. I don’t think I’d be interested in these if they were going to be my only se...
Luxman L-509Z Integrated Amplifier
Oops I just realized you meant the 509 not the 507.  The 509 draws 130 continuous and 370 peak. If you want to use Paul’s guidelines that’s 1300 watts.  Still easy to find under $150
Luxman L-509Z Integrated Amplifier
Paul probably means 10x continuous power, not peak power.  The 507z draws 86 watts at idle so using Paul’s math that would be about 860 watts for the transformer.  Another recommendation I’ve also heard that you want at least 2x peak draw, so in t...
Heresy IV vs Zu DW6/Soul mk2
I was able to audition the Heresy IVs and was pleasantly surprised. I had it in my head at the time for some reason that high sensitivity speakers would sound similar to each other and that is definitely not the case. The Heresys are nothing like ...
When are speakers considered Hi-Fi and not Mid-Fi???
I really like @erik_squires definition- "If you can afford them, they are mid-fi.  If you can only see them in the rags they are hi-fi."  It acknowledges the relative nature of classifying gear-  each person needs to define for themselves what the...
Luxman L-509Z Integrated Amplifier
Get a step down transformer.  Aside from wasting a bit of electricity it won't impact the sound quality. If anything it may actually help smooth current to the amp and add a layer of protection against an electrical surge.
Heresy IV vs Zu DW6/Soul mk2
I heard the Zu’s and was kinda disappointed.  I loved the way they looked but they sounded much different then I was expecting.  Very raw and lacking in refinement. Almost like older car speakers from the 80’s/90’s. I’m going to see if I can test ...
Heresy IV vs Zu DW6/Soul mk2
Lack of deep bass is actually a plus, I’m in a townhouse and those lower notes seem to slip past walls more easily. I have a 45watt push pull tube integrated so all set there as well.  I’ll check out the Volti’s never heard of them, they seem to r...
Why is solid state more popular when tubes are better?
I like both SS and Tubes. Living in South Florida I don’t get to play my tube amp as much as I’d like due to heat but my SS integrated is almost as engaging, sounds more dynamic and can play a bit louder without ever getting more then barely warm....
