McIntosh MC 275 Mk IV or V with Harbeth M-40.1?
The drop in power suits the M-40.1's just fine. I do have to turn up my preamp about 5 more db's to get the same volume, but the speakers are not lacking any grunt. If anything, the sound is more full & robust moving from ss to tubes, at least...
McIntosh MC 275 Mk IV or V with Harbeth M-40.1?
Tom - so far, so good. I'm currently listening with all of the stock tubes to get a feel for things, but have the NOS RCA 5751's & Sylvania 12AT7's ready to roll. Surprisingly, the amp sounds really, really good with just the stock tubes... a ...
Mcintosh C-2300 first impressions
Like others have said... You can't expect to optimize the sound of a tube preamp without excellent NOS tubes. Selecting & installing the right NOS tubes made a night & day difference in my Aesthetixs Calypso. You will be selling yourself w...
McIntosh MC 275 Mk IV or V with Harbeth M-40.1?
Rick - On Neil's (Nsgarch's) advice, I plan on sticking with the stock Svetlana KT88's for now (due to limited funds), but have NOS RCA triple mica black plate 5751's and Sylvania tmbp 6201's I purchased from Neil that I will experiment with this ...
kt 88 vs kt88
Is everyone referring to the Gold Lion "re-issues"... or NOS? Big difference in price and availability. Please clarify, as I may be in the market for inexpensive re-issues for my Mac MC275.
Conrad-Johnson ET-2 vs Aesthetix Calypso
The stock version of the Calypso is not very impressive in my experience. You have to hear it with the right NOS tubes to know what it's capable of. Assume you'll need to spend $400 or so on NOS tubes if you go with the Calypso. The same can proba...
McIntosh MC 275 Mk IV or V with Harbeth M-40.1?
Stuck a deal for a MC275 MK V. Really looking forward to rolling tubes in my 1st tube amp!
Harbeth Radial Driver - How Good?
Ditto the advice from Nolitan. Your 12' x 14' room should accomodate either speaker wihout a problem. A 200 WPC Linn amp is overkill, but will work fine. I recently downsized from the $20K Dynaudio C4 to the $13K Harbeth M-40.1's and have not look...
McIntosh MC 275 Mk IV or V with Harbeth M-40.1?
Lewinskih - Yes I will be using RCA cables, so you advise is pertinent... thank you. One question though.... when you said add "V1" tube to the signal path, what do you mean by V1?Thanks,Paul
McIntosh MC 275 Mk IV or V with Harbeth M-40.1?
Rick - are you using stock tubes in the Mac 275... and if not, which ones are the most critical to replace as far as sound quality goes? I use select NOS tubes in my Calypso and the difference is night & day.
Harbeth SHL5 vs 40.1
Markus - Is your tube amp a good fit for the M40.1's... does it have enough juice to control the bass? I've always wanted to try a tube amp (thinking McIntosh MC 275) and may eventually go that route after some research just to try something diffe...
How many are using Amp to CD with variable...
I've tried running my Audio Aero Capitole CDP direct thru my Plinius SA-102... however, I found the sound to be significantly better when run thru my Calypso preamp.
Indie/alternative artists that keep things simple
I recommend Paul Westerberg, Son Volt and Pete Yorn. All fall into the category of "lack of commercialism".
Audio Research VT100, MKii and MKiii
It seems like VT-100's can be found very readily on the used market. Do they have a reputation for having reliability problems?
What are the Best FM tuners?
I just replaced my uber-expensive Magnum Dynalab MD-108 with NOS tubes with a surprisingly enjoyable vintage Sansui TU-919. The Sansui has not been modded and sounds great as-is.
