Why so expensive??
Because of the belief in the following equation:$$$$$$$$$ = sound quality. As a high-end axiom, one can only seek to refute at at one's risk and peril.
Ethics: To what degree?
The notion that you are seeking some status above that of audiophile is your reference to "close friends in the high end business,". What does it have to do with the price of bacon?
Ethics: To what degree?
Very nice post, form-wise. What community? Why all this roundabout way of doing things? So you want to blow the whistle but you haven’t the guts. We all face situations were a product fails and we deal with it the best we can. Will a company be sw...
Unhappy with tubes so which transistor amp?
Tube equipment always requires more care. The failures you have encountered with a brand new ARC amp don't seem usual for the brand, although, as with anything man-made, breakdowns will occur. Very often transistor amps are touted as having "tube-...
Regards to the Rack
Another piece of audio insanity: what physical property is addressed by a rack? There is no known effect on transistor equipment of the vibrations in the room, either from footfalls or from the speakers. In room acoustics is a very important facto...

Cartridge recommendations for Rega RB 1000
II have an Ortofon B set-up on my P9/RB 1000 and it sounds marvellous to my ears. Problem is I have not used anything else with it so I have no valid point of comparison.
Allison 3's, anyone?
I had Ones for a long time, a good while ago. Newer speakers, on the whole, are much better. The Allisons probably sound quite satisfying even today, but the comparison with newer speakers is hardly fair. It would still be nice to have a pair of A...
Jennifer Warnes 20th Anniversary Fam Blue Raincoat
Well Acoustic Sounds in the regular email messages I receive from them as the CD as a "preorder" for $18.98 or so, but there is no mention of the vinyl version. I would not buy the vinyl if remastered digitally. Why bother?
Redbook cd's???
Simply means CDs that comply with the general CD norms published, so it seems, in a redbook. It has no connection whatsoever with Chairman Mao! Excludes, obviously, SACDs and DVDAs. Not sure if HDCD is to be found in the "redbook".
Cables for Audio Research
Any good cable will do. Recordings to play are more of a challenge.
ARC amps and 6550C Winged "C" small pins
Yes. I got into a tiff with the local ARC dealer who gave me a hard time for buying tubes from a known tube supplier. The tech (the owner's brother as it turns out) told me the tubes were the wrong ones for my VT-100 Mk III and wanted to sell me "...
