shielded vs unshielded pros and cons?
For ICs I go with shielded cables, especially when using long runs.If the environment is free of EMI and RFI noise and the cables are short, unshielded cable should suffice. In theory shielding colors sound, so pick your poison.I have no idea how ...
Is it ever enough?
Hopefully “it” is never enough. To me it’s about the journey. When it is enough, then my journey is over. I do however believe that more folks on the forum want to reach the destination, so hopefully they get to a place where it’s enough. I pray I ...
Is bass the most important frequency band?
Interesting. I’m a detail freak and bass doesn’t come into the equation for me. Don’t get me wrong, it can’t be missing and it can’t be boomy, but it’s not something I listen for.
System building; a meditation
Your question is very broad and as you allude, I also don’t think there is a correct answer. My system morphed into what it is today over a period of decades. I would never have dreamt I’d be where I am today when I started off. I also use SET amps...

Great to hear @jasbirnandra !
why do so many discussions turn contentious?
" Honestly @arcticdeth are you suggesting that we embrace a platform of obnoxious,"@ three_easy_payments I don't think that's what arctic is saying. Speaking under correction, I think he was responding to the post prior to his.

+1 @cleeds +1 @arcticdeth
why do so many discussions turn contentious?
“You always get the technically informed members …”The ignorant always consider themselves as “technically informed”. “who feels it’s their duty “Nobody’s have a tremendous need of an outlet where they can pretend to be a “somebody”, deluding them...
why do so many discussions turn contentious?
No, because you always get the conceited clown who feels it’s his duty to insult those who do not fall in step with his “sensibilities”.
A revolutionary way to raise the performance of your system for very little money
@amorstereoThank you for your response.I’m wanting to ground my pre amp only. I power it from battery/inverter and ground it from the wall plug. The ground from the wall plug introduces noise which negates much of the benefits of the battery power...

Why would you need to plug the ground master City into a route master? Surely I can run wires from the ground master City directly to my components?
Electrolytic capacitor replacement
Got you. I am interested in using film for both better sound and reliability. I’m going to try and see if I can squeeze Mundorf Tubecaps in. The 30uFs are rectangular and if I can superglue them against the sidewall I’ll get them enough of them in...
Electrolytic capacitor replacement
@grannyring Thanks, I’ll look into them. I’ll probably go for one of the three prong MLytics. Given the cost of the kaiseis, I’ll use them on cathode bypass positions only. On a power supply the cost would run up pretty fast. Reading between the l...
Electrolytic capacitor replacement
@grannyring Yep, I keep uF the same (or close) and voltage I'll either go up or at least keep the same. Sizewise I cannot swing Clarity or Mundorfs. At a pinch I can squeeze in Solens, but as you mentioned they're not very good. If they aren't an ...
Electrolytic capacitor replacement
@grannyring I’ve put the Clarity in a cathode bypass position on a driver tube and it sounds very good. It added a ‘gentle’ but detailed quality. Thanks for advice; good call as always! You mentioned Solens are ok in a power supply. I’d love to use...
