2008 RMAF – – – all things analog.
Doug,It was very nice meeting you and Paul; I also happen to agree that the Oswald Mills room was entirely engaging and gets my vote for Best of Show; I spent more time there than in any other room - aside from perhaps the Highwater Sound rooms, b...
Great sounding new vinyl
Strange how everyone's list (except Jazdoc's) spans the dawn of recorded sound until, oh, around 1987. Recommendations thin out in a hurry thereafter...hey, isn't that around the time digital became the ascendant recording AND playback medium?? Fu...
RMAF.....Meet & Greet
I'm sure I'll wander over at least one of the evenings...-Richard
reserve vta solves issue on zyx, triplaner
Tom,Yes - belt tension. If I had to guess, you're running with too much tension on the belt. Crank the VTA back to normal, and slacken the belt a bit. Remember, belt tension is pretty much correct when the table runs the fastest at any given speed...
EAR 834P + Bent Audio Stepups = greatness?
Mgreene,Several folks around here use Stephen's C3a based phono pre with excellent results, though I've never heard one myself - he too utilizes the S&B SUT in his design wired at 1:20. I have a pair of the copper S&B/Bent TX-103 SUTs and ...
DIY Flexi First attempt.
I'd recommend a forstner bit to cut the holes, and a drill press if available. The forstner will cut nicer holes than any other hole saw or speedbore type bit. Happy flexi-ing.-Richard
Upgrade for users of 1/2" mylar belt
Dgarretson,Albeit the fact you are running a rather complex idler system on your drive chain, I still agree with Doug that you'll have audible cogging via the Mylar belt, especially with the 300 RPM motor. I've tried implementing the same Hurst mo...
Question concerning the Mint Tractor
Doug,Insufferable? Never! Your contributions to the corpus of collective knowledge is without peer. To really extract the most from analog, you have to be picky and anal-retentive...'close enough' will always lead the analog enthusiast astry.I do ...
Mint Tractor
Tvad,Agreed, especially with most turntables. Dealing with the Teres, Galibier, Redpoint or any other high-mass table however is a different matter -- 35 lb. platters just don't really move too easily on their own! A most pleasant Labor Day weeken...
Best 6JN6 for Berning ZH-270
I've found only slight differences between 6JN6 in any Berning amplifier application (well, in either the EA230 or the ZH270). There are subtle differences to be sure, and a cryoed tube will most likely be slightly quieter than an uncryoed tube. I...
Mint Tractor
Gents,I've abandoned the tape-down approach altogether. Between the weight of the plate glass protractor and the platter on the Galibier, it simply doesn't move. I used to tape the platter to the 'plinth' using blue painter's tape, but now I find ...
Mint Tractor
Stringreen,The Mint protractor certainly is a pain to use, but oh so rewarding. Incidentally, Yip told me he uses a "custom" version himself that he wouldn't dare market since the line pitch is about a third smaller than what we're using. He does ...
Feickert analogue protractor....Owners impressions
Downunder,Nice comparison of the Mint and the Wally. I will disagree however about the efficacy of Wally's etched groove vs. Yip's fine silk-screened line. I found the Wallytractor etched groove would actually "assist" the stylus into "finding" th...
Feickert analogue protractor....Owners impressions
Sunny,Interesting note regarding the stock Rega cardboard protractor vs the MintLP. I'm curious if Yip designs his Rega protractors with Stephenson alignment nulls (like the stock Rega protractor). Anyone who's ever tried to align a cart on a Rega...
Have the Joe Jackson Look Sharp Album - Any Good?
The original 10" is not all that uncommon, and can usually be had for a reasonable price - I have a copy. I find the original 12" US A&M issue to be on par with the 10" version sonically; not too much difference between them. We saw Joe Jackso...
