Very long cable run question
If the problem is that your cables are picking up radio frequencies, a shielded cable could help. It doesn't sound like that is the problem since you are getting a crackling noise. You might have blown a speaker or have a loose connection. For man...
The best speaker you ever heard?
Hi Hifi, thanks for doing all that work. That was very interesting. Can you tell I haven't looked at this thread for a while? ;-)
Can I run a CD player & phono w/no preamp
From your question, I assume your amps have multiple inputs (e.g., one for XLR, one for RCA). If so, there's no harm in running the phono preamp to one input and the cd to another and then switching as needed at the amp. However, please be sure to...
help with tube tester.
You might try these links -- the third is of particular interest since you can buy a manual there.http://www.suertenich.com/html/tester/tubetester.htmlhttp://www.vacuumtubes.com/I-177.htmlhttp://www.vacuumtubes.com/manuals.htmlYou may also need to...
underrated or unheard of musician/band
Christine Kane -- she has about four cd's. Good music, wonderful lyrics, very poetic in a folksy/earthy/next-door kind of way. Great voice! I first heard her perform for the North Carolina Dance Theatre and I've been a big fan since.
Unintended lyrics
My wife heard "strain my dick" instead of "strange magic" -- neither of us can remember the artist.
Audiogon identifier at Stereophile show?
A scarlet letter perhaps? ;-)
What music would you like at your funeral?
I'd like more of an Irish wake -- how about some George Thorogood's "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer"? Or perhaps some German beer drinking songs like "Das Jagen Das Is Malt Mei Leb'n"? Since I would like my stereo playing at the wake, some stop...
Tube Matching Primer
Thanks again Jay and Dcrookham53. I hope my question wasn't too naive or vague since there were no other responses -- unfortunately, I'm a tube novice. If anyone needs more clarification to my question, please let me know.
Power Cord Priority
Agree with Warrenh and Ajahu. Go with a power conditioner -- it can also save your equipment from frying in certain circumstances. Plus, it helps clean the grunge out of the power more than a power cord can do.
Power Cord Priority
If you don't plug into a conditioner, go first with your weakest power supply. That's usually your digital gear.
Would you buy speakers with out first listening ?
Dave, I've been let down. The good news is that it was a relatively inexpensive pair of monitors I purchased for my daughter. She was off to college and I didn't have time to listen locally. The JM Labs were pretty good, but not up to the hype. Si...
Tube Matching Primer
Thanks Jay. I assume "very linear tubes" are those with a wide, even frequency response and the only way to test that is with your ears, which is what I'm doing (it's really kind of fun). Any advice on tube matching? I read a lot about tube matchi...
Review: Aesthetix Calypso Line Stage Tube preamp
Thanks for the wonderful review J.D. I am in the process of rolling tubes in the new Cary cd player and it's a long process. I know how time consuming your review must have been and I appreciate you sharing your experiences with us.
The black hole of component repair?
My California Audio cd player took about 2 months to repair(when they were still in business). My daughter's Consonance integrated amp took about 3.5 months (that may have been partly her fault). On the other hand, the owner of PBN (they make Sier...
