Interesting when one changes a lifetime habit. In your case, imagine the possibilities if you had not followed the panel speaker paradigm for all those years! That’s why I run both a Quad ESL and box speaker systems. 
Romex to your amp?
In an effort to get the Romex out, I once ran a thick stranded extension cord from my rig to the breaker box. It sounded worse. So I went back to the wall receptacle and it sounded better.

The midi range, not the tweeter, is the most important driver in a speaker.
Odd post. Maybe you mean the midrange of the music spectrum? 
OMG - I am just investigating ‘tweaks’ to improve my audio system.
"Tweaks" in my day were always cheap using everyday items. For example, I wrap masking tape around the glass part of the fuse. Don't let tape touch metal. Big improvement for practically free. 
A Worthwhile Untrasonic Cleaner
Look into inserting a filter to keep the solution clean. 
Choosing the right truntable
Unsure whether you mean to upgrade your table or upgrade to a new table. If the former, isn't the natural upgrade the VPI 3D arm?
