Phasing
Speaker set up is critical. By way of example, using one of those disc's you referred to I had my system dialed in fairly well, i.e. no center image when 'out of phase'. Then I shifted my chair about 6 inches to the right, trying to correct a slig...
Puzzling preamp problem
When you reversed channels I suspect all you did was reverse the source output, not the pre-amps out put. Swapping the tubes would be more revealing I think.
Piano sounds harsh
"A huge crack and one channel of my system died".This sounds more like a power tube issue to me. I doubt that a failure of a small tube would shut down the amp is the likely culprit. It could be a transitory problem which went away when the amp re...

Since you're just speculating (:-) so will I. I've never compared them. It is likely that the pre/amp combo will have at least slightly better resolution, or at least presentation of detail, but unless you have very high quality speakers which hav...
Audible Illusions Tube Pre-Amp Hum- Help Diagnosing
You are right re tube noise being static and ground hums being varible depending on volume setting. I was just trying to simplify. If you have them on hand, it is more simple to change out the small tubes and see what happens.

I've been doing this for a long time and have dabbled in SOTA stuff as well as some moderately high end stuff, solid state and tubes. I have now settled into two PL Dialogue integrateds, the One and the Two. Two systems. They are about 4 to 5 year...
Audible Illusions Tube Pre-Amp Hum- Help Diagnosing
A 'tube thing' would more likely be a static like noise and it would more likely appear in one channel (at least first). I would focus on a 'ground thing' and start disconnecting your sources, one at a time an see if it goes away. If not then disc...
Diana Krall
FWIW, I tried (and own) many of  Krall's earlier recordings. They are not really bad, really. And without references I'd probably enjoy them more. I've never heard her live so I can't really comment on here showmanship and whether or not that is a...

First I must admit that I prefer my Mahler big, bold, full of angst, etc. Don't care much for the soft romantic approach preferred by many. My favorite symphony is his sixth. I'm partial to Thomas Sanderling and the St Petersburg PO in this sympho...

Craig, #While Fisher might not be the last word in Dvorak it is certainly pretty good, and the recordings are excellent. If you are interested you might try his version of the VC with the BFO and Akiko Suwanai which is excellent by any standard. I...

How come in these forums folks rarely discuss, or even mention, at least so it seems to me, the music of Dvorak. Occasionally someone will mention his Violin or his Cello Concertos, but not so much his symphonies and even less so his Tone Poems an...

Glad you can appreciate Stanford, cribbing and all. Speaking of cribbing, I was just listening to a real Irishman, Hamilton Harty, who quotes the ’Garry Owen’ in one of his pieces. At least he was Irish! No so much for the 7th Infantry or a couple...

Beat you to it twoleftears. I just listened to my Maazel/Askenazy  version on Decca's CD.  It too has been on the shelf too long I think. It is an excellent performance and in good sound too. I do not have Pontien's so I cannot comment on the diff...

A couple of off the beaten path 'Symphonies' that I just listened to (but not for the first time!) that I really enjoy when I just want to hear big, bombastic stuff, sort of like many Strauss tone poems, not so much like a more formal  symphony.  ...
Recommendations for headphones under $400?
Mr Speaker's Mad Dog's. Nice rich sound. Probably not as accurate as my up market Senn's but very enjoyable.
