Cables-how can you be sure of authenticity? Ben, I've heard quite a few cables but I'm far from any kind of an authority. What my experience has been, with my modest stuff, is that some cables that I have listened to initially have that "wow" factor. You know, that "I'm hearing detail I've ...
Cables-how can you be sure of authenticity? "not blown away by it's performance".Why would you expect to be blown away? Given any two (or more) high quality traditionally designed cables of the same length you would have to have highly revealing equipment, good ears, and spend some time to ...
What was that smell? Siblance is fine - I usually use interstation noice from a tuner - its constant and you don't have much noise from the mid-range driver to distract you. Good luck.
What was that smell? Sounds like fried tweeter to me. Put your ear close to the tweeters with something hissy on with the volume up and see what you hear.
Very Small Desktop Speakers I just bought some small Paradigm speakers for about $250 for my desk. Sound just fine to me - they are warm and not etched. Solid mid-range. Good build.
Moving from mid-fi to hi-fi -- Imaging questions To set up your speakers properly you need a sources with which you are totally familar. When your system reproduces these recordings properly you're done (although you can always revisit set up for fine tuning). Recordings which don't sound right ...
Sonic Frontiers to Conrad Johnson . FWIW you are not the first person who tried to put together a system based on magazine reviews and ended up with something hard to listen to for more than a few minutes. Magazine reviewers seem to always be impressed with "detail", the wow factor!...
looking to go from seperates to intergrated You need to give more info if you want other than generic recommendations or WAG's. What speakers, how loud do you play them, what size room, sonic preferences, tubes or SS, playback components and budget.
The quest for power I use a Muse 100 as a summer amp on a second system. Tonally it is very much like a SF SFS80 tube amp just not as much "tube" magic, but a bit more detailed presentation. 100wt a 8ohms 200wts at 4 ohms. That said, I saw a Muse 160 on Agon. This is...
Sonic Frontiers to Conrad Johnson . Well, you could always take a step back to the SFM 160's. They are a classic tube amp design. They are not near as cold sounding as the Power 2. The are very resonsive, tonally to tube selection and powerful. I run mine with SED 6550's and EI 6DJ8...
Is There A Mouse in my Preamp or Power Amp? What Elgordo sez. Drop in new line stage tubes and see if the problem disappears. Don't replace the phono tubes unless you only noted the sound when the phono was playing. Also, you may only need to replace the most sensitive of the line stage tub...
vpi aries/jmw-10, grado hum Grado's are notorious for their unshielded cartridges. Most commonly they react to the electronic field of the motor in a turntable which is commonly on the far side of the table from the arm. As the arm moves toward the center the hum becomes mor...
Speaker cable vs. interconnect cable length I agree with Eldartford, with SS it shouldn't be a problem. I have a high gain tube amp with an output impedence of 600 ohms. I use 25' IC's and can detect no loss of information when compared to 3' IC's. Just keep the IC's away from anything whic...
Anyone hear the Caravelle speaker and not like it? Warren, You're getting to be a real Oracle, are you from Delphi? :-)Pal, Warren is totally on point. I would add to his comments that if these speakers are as revealing etc as reputed they should be as critical of the sonic quality of the componen...
Current tube Manufacturer's as good as NOS Best What Swampwalker sez, and not all NOS tubes sound better than current production. There is a lot of crap out there disguised as NOS (including a lot of used pulls) and there are some excellent new production tubes. And there is a lot of NOS hype c... |
