Which tubes to roll
Tube rolling priorities -Power tubes make the bigger difference which can be good if you are looking for major tonal changes.Small tubes are more for fine tuning than major changes BUT, proper selection can make or break the sound of the power tub...
Would you buy used headphones?
Actually, you could probably get new pads and clean everything else except the 'drivers' with alcohol and be fairly safe. Fairly, except I don't know how you would clean the diaphrams with out damaging them. And as they say, you just don't know we...
Tube Amp,Solid State Preamp.
FWIW, think of a tube amp with a passive line stage ahead of it. That would (optimally) be the same as a tube amp with solid state pre-amp, except for with the solid state pre-amp you would have gain. In a perfect world. The real magic of tubes is...
What piece of music can you play over & over?
I listen to mainly classical and jazz. I've learned that it is best with music that I could 'play over and over' to not do so, once I understand the piece or the performance. Familarity can breed boredom, even with the greatest music. I now rarely...
Integrating sub via Bryston 10b crossover
"...should the high pass also be at 60hz?"Normally yes, but FWIW, unless you listen to high volume music, you might just try running the main speakers full range, and setting the sub at either 60,50, or 40 hz and see how that blends with the main....
will adding a subwoofer improve overall audio
"....would a sub help?"Maybe.............Depends on the size of your roomDepends on the dimensions of your room......Depends on the set up you can facilitate......Depends on what sounds you are trying to add or correct....A sub could add some bass...
Speaker noise - hissing
I'd bet it is the 6sn7's if it annoys you get some recommendations for some good low noise tubes. The new production EH's are quiet but I don't know if you would like them in your amp. I use them in some Cary amps and compared to some NOS RCA's I ...
Speaker noise - hissing
OK. Now, that I think about it, have you ever heard the amp operate dead quiet? Or is it a new amp to you and you are just noticing it. If you heard it operate dead quiet, was it with the same speakers or at least speakers with a high sensitivity ...
Speaker noise - hissing
Not to be picky but I assume you mean the small tubes in the power amp? That is a logical source of hiss. And 6SN7's are not power tubes. From what you have said yes. Now if in addition to these small tubes you meant the big power tubes as well, if...
How to diagnose the need for room treatment?
FWIW, in my post I referred to 'smooth FR' but I purposefully did not say 'flat FR'. Flat suggests to me hearing all frequencies at the same SPL, and when I have heard sounds in a room that were measurable as flat (especially from speakers which a...
How make my Ayre system "warmer"?
FWIW, Rodman99999, having owned one of those DK5 since they first came out, I think the Siemans may be particularily synergistic with it, not that they have a universal tone, one size fits all, for all applications. But I could imagine a case coul...
How to diagnose the need for room treatment?
I can't tell from your comments exactly how much actual speaker/sitting positioning work you have already done, or how you did it, so it is really hard to comment on what you should do next. BUT, IMHO, you really can't get your sound to 'improve' ...
Speaker noise - hissing
Yes. Most probably the small tubes. If the hiss is annoying you will need to get 'low noise' tubes. They are usually a bit (or a lot) more expensive so be careful not to buy 'more' than you actually need. Also consider that changing tubes, unless ...
Does good technology guarantees musicality?
Chris, Yep! IMHO, most anything sounds better than op amps in the DAC/CDP's I've heard.BTW, I also prefer tubes. Nothing is perfect and they give me a lot of flexibility that SS doesn't. More fun...........
How to reproduce sound of piano
Re mono in the next room or down the hall, I agree, as I indicated on Page 1, BUT its not the same when you listen to mono in the same room from your sweet seat. With a grand piano in an enclosed space even though the source of the direct sounds ar...
