LAST Record Preservative. Do you believe?
I totally agree with the above. Also, it's important to make sure you never are using a worn out needle - that will trash your records.Tracking force matters.I used to use stylast and it did not seem to extend the life of the needle at all, contrar...
Top resale value speakers
buy a used pair of a well thought-of brand from someone who's babied them; when it comes time for you to sell them, you'll take little if any loss. if you buy ANY brand new, it's value will go down the minute you take them home.
Sony SCD-1 Player NO DISC DETECT
lots of info about this on audioasylum.com
Next on the list for Mahler....
Kindertotenlieder (DG 138 879), sung by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is a 'must have' LP in my bookDas Lied Von Der Erde is another beautiful piece. The LP version on DG (2535 184) w/Nan Merriman is beautiful, but the best I've heard is unfortunately ...
cable upgrades , real or rip off
if you can, establish a relationship with a dealer who will agree to loan you cables for a weekend. put on those CDs/LPs you've listened to a million times and see if anything jumps out at you: are you hearing details you never heard before? is th...
Leaning towards tubes, but need help long
since you list orchestral as one of the genres you like, make sure you get an amp with some power, not a single-ended triode. other things you should be aware of are the sonic signatures of the different gear, ranging from quite neutral to quite w...
Is anyone willing to entertain the idea
the human power to differentiate between tiny gradations is enormous, but doing the comparison is where it gets tricky. take color, for example: people can see differences between incredibly close shades/tints if they are side by side, but not if ...
New law forbidding the sale of used gear Japan
there's actually a quite widespread aversion to buying used over there to begin with. friends of mine speak of people basically putting perfectly good possessions on the the curb for the taking. lightly used japanese car engines are often exported...
Please define
I think it's something more subtle. A lot of people with both digital and analog (lp) front ends find that their listening sessions tend to be longer with records than with CDs and ascribe this to 'fatiguing sound'. It's definitely the case for me...
Jazz Meets Symphony recommendations.
miles davis- sketches of spaincharlie parker - bird flies with the herd (bootleg, lo-fi but cool...)
Best Jazz Albums
I think jazz is too big a category to get into 'best' lists. everyone has their preferred area - big band, swing, dixieland, bebop, free jazz, vocals etc. It makes more sense to figure out what pulls your chain, then find others who are into that ...
A New Twist on the Usual DAC Question
if I'm not mistaken, there's no such thing as a DAC for SACD (in fact, the conspiracy theorists among us think that SACD was an attempt on the part of the record companies to save themselves from copying and piracy).
Bluebook value of records
if you really want to get an idea of what a record is worth, check out closed auctions on ebay. as my old friend the record store owner said, "it's worth what you can get for it" and ebay tells you what people are actually paying for things. it's ...
Time To Replace Tubes?
since tube amps are symmetrical, whenever there's something going on soundwise which is tube-related, you can do things like swap out tubes like you did or, if the funny business is in one channel, switch the left and right channel tubes one by on...
How long do speakers last?
the foam surround can just get worn out, resulting in a less 'quick' sound. also, how much do you listen to them? 1 hour vs. 8 hours/day might be a factor in longevity...
