How do you decide what to listen to? Same old stuff?
For me, radio is on for my mornings, got a couple stations that I like. Mid-day is usually a couple of records, what ever moves me. For the evening, cooking dinner, or hanging out, put on a Tidal playlist. I really like Tidal's "My Mixes" or I use...
After 20 years, in the market for a power amp
Why not just fix your current amp? Or do you just want something new?  Will say MOSFET amps sound wonderful to me, have not had the chance to hear any high end Class D, but have not been all that impressed.
The end of physical media is neigh
Back in the day, I had a DVD collection around 1200, even had a picture binder with everything in it on the coffee table. This is back in the pre HDMI days, when Netflix did not stream, they sent you DVD's in the mail. It was so much fun to get th...
"Cleaning" Vinyl Makes It Worse Not Better!
First if after you "clean" a record it keeps leaving deposits on the needle, you did not clean said record. You just released some dirt. You might not be using enough fluid, letting it soak in enough, or removing enough of it after the final wipe....
HOW DID YOU END UP WITH YOUR DREAM SYSTEM?
Do any of us really have the end game dream system? At least for me, it's an endless upgrade. Every tweak leads to yet another tweak, or new part. Feel like our systems are just a moment in time, are always evolving.  My system started very modes...
It Was Twenty Years Ago Today!
Think I'm a little younger then some here.  For me "The Red Hot Chili Peppers" was a big band to see live in the early 90's. They played a small venue in Rode Island around 91, they had 2 opening bands with them. First was Smashing Pumpkins (bef...
Added a Schiit Freya+ to a Sansui 8080
Curious, why you added the Schiit Freya+ in the first place? What were you trying fix?  Vintage gear can sound just as good as new gear, it has to be maintained, and used correctly. Do you know if your Sansui has ever been recaped, or checked out...
What is the first thing you do when you unwrap a new vinyl record?
New records can be so dirty! The crap stiff paper sleeves are horrible!  Usually, unwrap, give it a good cleaning, use a good inner and outer sleeve.  Clean records always sounds better!! Plus a clean record doesn't have static. The needle doesn...
Streaming from a TV
Use HDMI, so much better, also easier to setup. HDMI has full bandwidth, toslink does not. In my HT setup, my TV is the hub, everything plugs into it, using eArc from the TV to the receiver. TV is set for passthrough for sources and PCM for the T...
Conrad Johnson Mf-2500a amp and PF-1 Preamp Recap?
IMHO, recapping/referbing "vintage" gear is worth it.  If you are unsure, just pull and test a few of the caps, see how good/bad they are. From my experience, lower voltage caps go first, they usually start to drift up, ESR goes up. When you repl...
Large speakers plus EQ, what have you done?
My system is vintage. The bass has been ok, very good with some songs and lacking with others. Have been looking for a vintage EQ, while also thinking about getting the Loki Max.  After reading stuff all over the web, everyone said recap the cros...
Should I replace the crossover capacitors in my vintage AR 3a speakers?
Interesting conversation. Have restored a few sets of vintage speakers. Always replace the XO caps. most of the time, don't even test them, just replace.  Every time it has been a night and day difference for the better! It always opens the speak...
Question on Speaker Placement
Find a track you really  like that has full dynamic range. Place tape on the floor where your speakers are. Move them all around, each time listen to that song. Place tape where you think things work, repeat till you find the "sweet spot" When y...
Realistically Speaking.....
Picked up my power amp from CL, drove 3 hours each way to pick it up. Original owner, never touched, very well taken care of.  Funny when I got there, he told me, there has been a ton of interest, and the price went up $200! But it was still a go...
What devices have you found useful when inspecting your stylii for cleanliness?
I just use my iPhone, put it in camera mode, then zoom in.
