How long does it take a decent quality speaker to "wear out"?
On my circa 1982 AR-9, the smaller sheets of diffraction limiting flat acoustic panels around the tweeters and midrange drivers turned to a messy dust and need to be replaced. (These are panel around the drivers that fit inside a larger, thicker a...
What is the best way to clean Vinyl?
Just beware that "wall wart" powered Ultrasonic machines like the Humminguru and all of the even cheaper knockoffs you see on Amazon do NOT provide in any way, the same level of small bubble formation and cavitation and cleaning that "real powered...
New MOFI speaker (Andrew Jones)
I would hope that at $3700 these don't sound bad. In fact, I hope they do sound great as per the desciption of those who have heard them and Stereophile Magazine. But all things being equal, would you rather spend $3700 on these or on a set of Are...
How long does it take a decent quality speaker to "wear out"?
@jimijam good for you, however, I did read this blurb on a site selling replacement polycaps for the AR-9 (I have a set and plan on opening them up to see which capacitors were used. Mine are circa 1982, so I don’t know if they might be Callins or...
Totally Ridiculous....Auditions on YouTube!
Just too many variables to draw any real world conclusions. Microphones sound different at various price points and the preamps they are plugged into are just as important. And you have to wonder does the YouTuber even know how to properly operate...
HELP!!!! Newbie looking for a decent 2 channel power amp in the $1,000 range
Outlaw Audio’s RR2160 MKII Stereo Receiver. $999. Plenty of power, a decent DAC, and a good phono stage. 110W/channel into 8 Ohms, 165W/channel into 4 Ohms.
DAC recommendations
I've often wondered if Steve Jobs were still alive, would Apple have spent the money out of their loaded saddlebags and developed an "Apple Music Connect" app?  Steve always wanted to keep things easy and a "no brainer" for consumers, but the curr...
Why is everyone so down on MQA?
Engineering wunderkind Bob Carver was not impressed. That's enough for me. He says only a bat might hear a slight difference now. That MQA was changed from its demonstration algorithm when it first rolled out to how it is being currently implement...
The revolution has begun!
" It changes PCM to PWM in software and then drives a GaN based class D output stage."  So, only PCM? Can't just take in the more analog sounding (your mileage may vary) DSD and be done with it?  And if it can drive a GaN based class D output sta...
Where does "MidFi" differ from "HiFi" or "LOFI"?
@cd318 indeed. This Fletcher-Munson curve has been discussed on here several times. Hence the need (if we are honest) for either an EQ or what used to be termed a "Loudness Button" that would compensate for how the human ear perceives the frequenc...
Vinyl record cleaning
Use Cascade Dishwasher Detergent. It has better surfactants than Tide and won't leave a residue behind. Note that this method works best if you live in an area with soft water instead of hard water.  Do NOT use a Brillo Pad.
Where does "MidFi" differ from "HiFi" or "LOFI"?
"The ear hears from a range of 20-20,000HZ, but mid-range is certainly not at the 10,000HZ level.".  You need to think in terms of octaves, not the full frequency range. 20Hz to 40Hz is an octave, 40Hz to 80Hz is an octave, 80Hz to 160Hz is an oc...
Reliable Mid-Priced 7.2 Channel Receiver
I have an OLD Denon 5.1 AVR in the den and it does everything I could hope. Yeah, my old TV is only 4K, not one of the newer 8K models.  I can only comment that the Denon just works and this after more than a few firmware updates where I held my ...
What am I missing?
I love my CDs and I love streaming. CD quality at 16-bits/44.1KHz was not arrived at lightly. In the late 1970s much research was done on how "good" digital needed to be in order to sound, well, "good". At the same time the technology of the day h...
HoloAudio STREAMER is out now
The blurb on their website says this, "This audio device is using a Pi Compute Module 4  it only uses the Pi4 as core system. It differs from a standard Raspberry Pi because it does not have all peripheral components on board, but has been develop...
