vpi tnt still a performer?
Which TNT?  There were at least 5.  Original or modified/updated?   Which platter?
turntable speed control
If you're going to quote me, please quote enough for it to make sense.  What I wrote was:"More importantly, I believe, we can hear things that we cannot measure.  That is why, despite the great (industry approved) measurements from relatively inex...
turntable speed control
"Not incidentally, the question isn’t only, "Is it measurable?" but, "Does it create an audible effect?" I say that because we can measure some things that we cannot hear".More importantly, I believe, we can hear things that we cannot measure.  Th...
Platter upgrade for VPI MkIV?
Thanks for the bearing tip.  It's on its way.  About the thrust plate, I'm not so sure.  Do you think VPI may have an extra thrust plate? It may be that you are correct about the Delrin, but I think we and VPI have been using the term "acrylic" for...
Platter upgrade for VPI MkIV?
Yes, of course.  But the bearing that does most of (indeed, almost all of) the turning is the non-inverted bearing.  My only point was that there is a popular misconception that inverted bearings are inherently superior and non-inverted bearings a...
Platter upgrade for VPI MkIV?
My $0.02, having been a VPI owner for many years.Acrylic beats aluminum. Heavy beats light. The type of bearing doesn’t matter; the quality of the bearing does. Each type of bearing has its advantages and disadvantages.IMNSHO, and that of some exp...
VPI 3D tonearm adjustment
The short answer is (1) the head shell should be level when the arm is level and (2) corresponding with the VPI factory about your problem will get you a quicker solution than anything you can do here. There was another, longer, thread about the 3D...
Best Ways to Organize a Classical Record LP Collection ?
In my own case it is by label (+ one section for misc. labels), and then by approx. date of composition: baroque, classical, romantic, modern, etc. I keep vocal, opera separate. If I had fewer records it would just be by date of composition.
LINN LP-12
I don't know much about Linns, but what you describe about the vocalist sounds like your system is out of L - R phase.  Try reversing the connections to one of your speakers.  Of course the out of phase problem may also originate at the connection...
VPI acrylic vs. aluminum
Just a word for the OP who may feel neglected in all of this.  I think in his original question you hit the nail on the head.  The acrylic platter (by which I assume meant the acrylic ONLY platter) has real sonic advantages.  The heavy aluminum pl...
VPI acrylic vs. aluminum
Here's the platter: http://www.avsforum.com/forum/imagehosting/75530955554817eb537e.jpg There is a gap between the top and bottom platters. A belt-drive motor spins the lower segment while magnets link the top and bottom.
VPI acrylic vs. aluminum
"The Classic platter... in addition to being self-leveling, is also self-centering." Which means what exactly? And why would I care?So far as I know, my platter is level and centered and has no play whatever that I can discern.  Is there play in t...
VPI acrylic vs. aluminum
This is getting a bit personal. I’ll try to explain without returning the favor. At one point in my hobby I traded a VPI aluminum/lead platter for a virtually identical acrylic/lead platter. The improved performance of the table was clear for me to...
VPI acrylic vs. aluminum
IMO you are exaggerating the effects of the bearing types. Notwithstanding some theoretical advantage of the inverted bearing, the non-inverted bearing has the clear advantage of a continuous lubrication bath top to bottom. Also the bearing pivot,...
VPI acrylic vs. aluminum
coolhunter, What do you mean by "more musical?"coolhunter and stringreen,Do you mean the pure (clear) acrylic platter?
