TUBES!
Ring Clamps. What do you think?
I think a ring weight is great. I have a VPI and for many years I used a screw down clamp. The problem is that I always had to adjust the amount of pressure depending on the nature of any warp of a disk. Last year I switched to a TTWeights ring cl...
Classical Record Labels and Recording Engineers...
Wasn't there a second tape head reading the music ahead so that the spacing could be varied automatically? Or did that come later? In any event, the job was not done as well as it might have been as many Mercurys have music coming in very (I would...
Your favorite LP nobody has ever heard of

VPI JMW 10
Trading it in seems like a nice option. I'd like to hear more about that. Runner, did they replace the whole thing or just the armwand? As far as upgrades there are several: the drop counter-weight, adding outriggers to the upper bearing, a new low...
Hurst motor rumble?
It's hard to figure out what is going on. But if you want a quieter motor, you can try the 300 rpm one. You can get it less expensively directly from Hurst (IIRC it's exactly what VPI uses) but you would have to get a new, larger, pulley from VPI.
cartridge install issue
All of the above plus increase the VTF to the highest in the cartridge's range, or even .1 gm higher. See if that helps. If all this fiddling doesn't restore the balance, conclude that this used cartridge is not properly balanced and if it continue...
Cary or Conrad Johnson phono preamp?
As long as alternatives are being suggested I'll add the Fosgate Signature currently available for about $2M. All tube. No transformer or transistor in the signal path. Variable cartridge loading. Tube rectification and more gain than the CJ. Same...
Anyone have the Fosgate Signature V2 Phonostage?
I have had one for about 5 weeks and I love it. It is US made, unlike the Jolida, so its value may not be quite as high. It replaced a really fine solid state unit, and as the saying goes I want to listen to all my records again. With the right re...
VPI classic 3 or Prime ?
"One thing to keep in mind is that the classic 3 doesn't require the sds."Why not? It is offered as an "upgrade".
VPI classic 3 or Prime ?
"Reminds me of the TNT models from the 90's which were very, very good at the time."And still are. Arguably better than most current VPIs.
Do You Have a Favorite Disk to Set VTA/SRA?
Doug,Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I tried to make my inquiry very specific. I didn't think that the response depended upon specific equipment or listening preferences. I simply wanted to know if particular recordings have been particularly...
Alternative for VPI springs?
Squash balls. Make your own platform(s) and it all costs almost nothing, or use Ginko.

It's actually a low (and some consider QUITE low) compliance cartridge. 5x10-6cm/dyne (100Hz)However it can be used successfully in a medium to heavier arm. Just not for the very light arms suitable for a Shure, for ex.Very good cartridge, dependi...
