Floorstanding speakers vs. Standmount speakers&sub There is a pair of Wilson Sophias for sale here for $4,995. I bet you would be happy with them. In general, I think it is easier to rely upon the manufacturer to dial in bass with their own well designed crossover rather than trying to get it jus...
Power Cables for Tubed Integrated + CDP Combo??? Audience used is in your budget . They are flexible and yield a well balanced sound spectrum in my system. That said if I were trying new cords now I would be tempted by some of the more budget minded, not so fancy ones, like Cullen cable. Truth b...
Mcintosh with Ayre pre-amp If the impedance issues are within reason then I would guess it will sound good. Mac amps and Klipsch speakers have a certain synergy that is well known. I own some older Mac and Klipsch gear and can attest to the combination. Ayre sounds pretty c...
Tube amp decision - Thoughts If you want warmth I would say Conrad Johson. I am not sure of what it is you are really aiming for. $5500 is a goodly amount. I bought a used Jadis DA-60 for much less. It doesn't sound like that's what you want. If you are willing to go Chinese ...
12ax7 vs 5751 I am impressed with your choice of 6SN7s. I really like the Brimar CV1988 GTY. See if you can get some Sylvania GTs or Ws as well for 6SN7s. Given your choices with them I would definately recommend that you look into 5751s. I find 5751s to be mor...
What constitutes a "high output" moving coil cart? Wow all this negativity towards HOMCs. I really like my Dynevector 20X HO into a Graham Slee Amp 2SE. I think it sounds much more detailed and dynamic than my MM Goldring cart for instance. I am not an analog nut and don't switch tables, arms and ...
What constitutes a "high output" moving coil cart? All I can tell you is that I use a phono pre for MM or "HO MC" and my HO MC cart yields 2.5 mV. It has plenty of gain if that is any help.
AU24e Interconnects - but warmer Your first instincts were correct on this matter. Get Cardas especially anything with Golden in the name. I am quite sincere they lend a rich tone to your sound and are warm. I would stay away from silver or anything crystal clear. Again I am bein...
Speaker stands for B&W 804s I am not sure if Eden Sound out of Vermont is still making brass footers, but his prices for very heavy brass footers were much much less than MapleShade's. They would add significant stability and on top of a thick board/plinth would be even bett...
Merlin VSM MXr vs Thiel 2.4 vs Dynaudio C1 Your amp counts in this question. The Theils are notoriously power hungry, followed by the Dynaudio then much less power is needed to drive the Merlins which are relatively tube friendly. What are you planning to use for power? Tube or SS and how ...
Odyssey Khartago Ex. with Rogue Audio Perseus/Mag. My Favorite tubed preamp is an AES AE-3 which Upscale Audio may still have new. The beauty of this pre is that it uses 6SN7s which are still abundant as NOS and you can tube roll many many different brands and types to find the tone/sonic you like...
How do you test different tubes? I disagree that tube rolling is pointless. Even if you believe there are no longer any good old tubes available, there are usually several new tubes to try. There are no lending programs however and as already stated the only way is to buy and try...
Cary sli-80 power cord Yes I forgot to second the tube roll. My preamp's character changes immensley with tube changes. I happen to collect 6SN7s and bought my pre because it used them. I was thrilled when I found the rolling did reflect the tube's qualities. I ended up...
Buying used or sight unseen speakers a bad idea? It is almost inevitable that you can't hear/audition speakers before buying them due to the continuing dirth of local good audio stores. The shows can help but require travel and audition under less than ideal circumstances. I have managed to buy ...
advice need on peachtree decco 2 vs hybrid jolida I would encourafe you to be fearless and get an all tube integrated. Those speakers are practically crying out loud for true tube output power. If you get a decent amp lets say a used Prima Luna I think you will be very very happy with the results... |
