12ax7 vs 5751
I can't answer for Frogman but I certainly think for the most part that a warm tube sounds warm where ever they are with a few exceptions. there is no doubt though, that certain tubes just don't work in all circuits. For me as a rule I tend to lik...
Preamp Noob has a question
To answer your questions, yes 6SN7s, are tubes. They will last up to 10,000 hrs depending on the circuit, but you can figure about 5,000 in normal use. This particular tube is very easy to find since they are still currently produced. The better o...
sansui au 717 integrate amp
Mine sounds about as good as any mass market hi-fi gear ever did or does. The question in my mind is whether you can pick another one up for the same money that is in good condition. I guess most should really get an overhaul anyway, I never had m...
Preamp Noob has a question
A great tube pre for under $1000 new, was an AE-3 by Cary. But you will want to get some better 6SN7s for it. I saw one used, here this week, for $450. they tend to sell fast so keep your eyes open. Plenty left over for upgraded tubes. The sound w...
12ax7 vs 5751
Mcpherson,Thor has a very very good reputation. If you can get the British tubes into the pre it will make an obvious improvement. I happen to use a highly Modded AE-3 by AES a sub brand of Cary. It is a simple pre which uses 6SN7s, they have grea...
12ax7 vs 5751
Yes Mcpherson, I found the Focals very bright and somewhat over analytical when I first bought them. In the store, I was dazzled by all that detail and transparency. Wouldn't you know, it I had auditioned them by letting the store choose the ampli...
Yaqin Tube Buffer
Again, it will come down to which component pair will benefit most from the buffer's ability to allow the recipient component to "see" a very low impedance. I think that usually means the buffer between the CD player and preamp is best. Hey, it ca...
Review: Comparison of 5751 Tubes Raytheon, Sylvania, and more Tweak
12AU7s are a very low mu or voltage amplification tube. It is unusual for them function well in place of a 12AX7. But 12AU7s are frequently used in circuits as drivers for the 12AX7s. As a double triode I guess they can be phase splitters as well.

Tube kit for Nagra PL-L?
Jfrech,I am sure there are many people who would be happy with the stock tubes which a manufacturer selects for quality out of larger lots. However the tubes the manufacturer must choose from are only those that are currently available in large en...

McphersonI own Focal JM Lab 936 non Berylium tweeter speakers and it took a combination of things to get the tone I wanted. You have to ignore all the negative crap you will read about trying to adjust the tone of your system. In my mind it is my ...
How good does a TT have to be for a good cartridge
I suppose an explanation is warranted. The Scout has a JMW-9 tone arm with a 20XHO Dynevector cartridge. The Phono stage is a Grahm Slee Gram Amp 2 SE which has gain suitable for MM/HOMC carts. My Preamp is an AE-3 modded with top notch caps and h...
12ax7 vs 5751
I have tried 7025s only briefly. I found them to lack the delicacy transparency and detail the 5751s gave me. I didn't try many because they seem to be a favorite of the Guitar amp guys who drive up price and make good ones quite scarce. I know I ...
Frustrated with the sound of my system
I think good sound obviously combines both equipment selection and appropriate room set up. It cannot be all one thing or the other. Crappy low fi souces, amplification and speakers that sound bad will sound bad no matter what room they are in. Th...
value question
Even the average white bands? OK not really LOL
