Best Vintage Speakers for Classical & Jazz music
JBL L300 sound great on anything but Jazz especially. Hard to find but worth it.
Good Speakers for Rock and Roll Under 15K
If you’re still looking, there’s a pair of JBL 4315 on USAM for $6k. With the money you save you can fly to California to audition and pick up. These ROCK!!! and no horns. I’d buy them myself if I could.
Good Speakers for Rock and Roll Under 15K
JBL 4367 would be at the top of my list. Dynaudio active monitors would also be a consideration. Vintage JBL, 43xx line, would knock your socks off if you can find them in original condition.
surprising comparison of tube preamps
This is exactly the question I've been researching. I put a $400 Schiit Valhalla 2 tube headphone amp in place of my SS preamp. It sounded good from the start but really opened up when I configured it differently. I run the Valhalla with no attenu...
Is toeing speakers a bad idea?
I find it an interesting exercise to use a calibrated mic and RTA to see what effect my toe in has on frequency distribution. I go both ways. Use the RTA to find best position and listen. Or use my ears and then see what the distribution is. Just ...
Greg Timbers interview
@ditusa  I misread the model numbers article. It was a surprise to me and I got too excited.
Greg Timbers interview
@james633  I would love a pair of those. But I have to tell you my Greg Timbers designed 45 year old 4311wxa have all the qualities you describe without a horn. It’s Greg’s ears that give JBLs their sound. He knows what music should sound like.
Single input tube preamp
The LTA products look perfect. My question now is whether to go with the new Velo or save for the full preamplifier.
Single input tube preamp
Thanks for the responses. My budget is up to $2500. In my search I came across the Quicksilver Line Stage preamp. It's in my budget but another company I'm not familiar with. Anyone have experience with this piece? Or a similar unit from other com...
Single input tube preamp
@soix  Very interesting. I'm currently using a Schiit Valhalla 2, another OTL headphone amp/preamp in a similar setup. It gets input from my Bitfrost 2/64 and I run it wide open into a Schiit Kara preamp in passive mode. So, there's no attenuatio...
Getting into the music
My solution to that is to focus on lyrics. Their meaning and the way the vocals and music deliver it. Let the music speak to your feelings about the words you hear.
Does a particular musician’s songwriting and artistry speak to you above all others?
Buddy and Julie Miller.  Buddy as musician.  Julie as writer.
Do you think driver “break in” is real?
Sure it’s real. But another thing that’s real is your brain adjusting to a new sound. We all have a mental template of how something should sound and over time, we adjust our brains to the nuances of different gear.
What To Do?
That’s exactly the reason I gave up my vintage gear except speakers. No one left who repairs them as a main business. In 2021 I waited 4 months for a minor repair with communication only when I forced it. No more. Good luck.
All Pre 1970 Vintage speakers suck! Prove me wrong
JBL 4311A are the most musical speakers ever made. Prove me wrong.
