Analyzing DACs It seems like the general issue here is gain structure. Each component operates in a certain range and all components should operate most efficiently within that range. That’s a big part of synergy. How that gain is achieved differentiates quality.

Class D, "Control (Variable Gain)," Amplifier versus Class A/B Separates? I have the Schitt Kara. It's quite neutral and quiet. Having a passive mode is a big plus as I can use it as a remote volume control for pieces that don't have one. It's audio functionality is excellent. However, there are two issues that are ann...
I took Frank Zappa’s advice @nerdken After all these responses, I listened to it. I didn't care for the sound. I'm not sure any speakers could remedy that.
Single input tube preamp Yes, got the LPS. Makes me wonder why every high end manufacturer doesn’t do that. Eliminates all the isolation and heat issues. I’m not driving speakers, I’m driving a Parasound A23+. At the moment I’m going through my passive preamp with remote ...
Single input tube preamp @soix I was going to wait for the new LTA Velo but I found a pre owned MZ2 at a fair price. Hooked it up today and WOW. What a beautiful sound. Thanks for the input.
I took Frank Zappa’s advice @koestner My original post was in fun, and I hope everyone had fun with their favorite Zappa lines. Zappa is one of those artists I respect and admire but never really enjoyed listening to. He often had fun with his songs, but his thoughts about...
All speakers have a little EQ built in @mbmi When I auditioned it, I primarily used the low end adjustments but unfortunately it also affected the high end, making bright recordings sound brittle. And I’m not going to use an equalizer to correct problems introduced by the equalizer. ...
All speakers have a little EQ built in I should add that I tried a Schiit Lokius in my system. It’s not bad, but it does change the sound even set flat. The bypass works, but engaging it immediately affects the sound. I returned it.
All speakers have a little EQ built in My favorite speakers, JBL 4311, have a simple dividing network with volume controls. 2 capacitors and Lpads. Yes, over time the Lpads need cleaning, but devoting a couple of hours every 10 years isn’t a big deal. The drivers, cabinet, and crosso...
Best Vintage Speakers for Classical & Jazz music JBL L300 sound great on anything but Jazz especially. Hard to find but worth it.
Good Speakers for Rock and Roll Under 15K If you’re still looking, there’s a pair of JBL 4315 on USAM for $6k. With the money you save you can fly to California to audition and pick up. These ROCK!!! and no horns. I’d buy them myself if I could.
Good Speakers for Rock and Roll Under 15K JBL 4367 would be at the top of my list. Dynaudio active monitors would also be a consideration. Vintage JBL, 43xx line, would knock your socks off if you can find them in original condition.
surprising comparison of tube preamps This is exactly the question I've been researching. I put a $400 Schiit Valhalla 2 tube headphone amp in place of my SS preamp. It sounded good from the start but really opened up when I configured it differently. I run the Valhalla with no attenu...
Is toeing speakers a bad idea? I find it an interesting exercise to use a calibrated mic and RTA to see what effect my toe in has on frequency distribution. I go both ways. Use the RTA to find best position and listen. Or use my ears and then see what the distribution is. Just ... |
