ARC Tube preamp suggestions
I own an LS 25 and - as one more data point - would never put it in the "lush" sounding camp. In fact, all of the ARC gear that I've ever heard (though, admittedly, this list isn't all inclusive) falls toward the more neutral end of the tube spect...
Help Father of the bride dance song.
You might want to check out the song "Daughter" by Peter Blegvad. It's probably best known in the version performed by Loudon Wainright III at the end of the movie "Knocked Up". I think you'll find the lyric moving and it is certainly appropriate ...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?
Bond - I got YOUR point. It was mine that didn't make any sense (but sounded kinda funny, so I posted it, anyway).
Usijng two different subwoofers
AQ4L,Just curious - Have you ever tried crossing an octave higher?IME, the room usually does its nastiest work in this region. Check out the FR readout from the RTA function on the SMS-1 up through 100hz. If your room is anything like mine, it won...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?
Bond,Congrats on the new pre. Only one word of warning: Adults have been known to pee in the pool, too.MartyPS Not sure what that means, but I liked your metaphor.
Which Pre-amp. match with Krell KSA 200S Pow. Amp?
IMHO, the KSA-Xs series was anything but bright. If anything, these amps shaded very slightly darkish to my ear. I owned a KSA 50s and auditioned the bigger models extensively, and I might have sensed very slightly closed, diminished treble. It's ...
SS amps for merlin vsm
I've used a Krell KSA 50s, Odyssey monos, TAD Hibachi monos, and a Bel Canto ICE powered integrated, at one time or another. All are good sounding amps and all worked well with my VSMs, but the TADs were probably my favorite (and they were the lea...
What percentage of audiophiles use a sub ?
Tigg,I'm pretty confident that subwoofers will produce better measurements below 150ish hz than virtually any (non-corrected) monitor or full range speaker. I'm also sure that I prefer the sound of a well executed sub/main combo to any full-range ...
What am I missing? Americana?
Don't think anyone mentioned The Reivers yet. Back in the day, there was a lot of press to the effect that John Croslin was at the forefront of the "New Sincerity" movement of singer/songwriters you've nodded to here - and his bands' stuff added g...
Usijng two different subwoofers
I don't have experience with the specific experiment here, but I suspect that - if you're crossing to the subs at/below 80, 90, 100hz, it will probably be fine. As the x-over point moves North from there, issues may well arise.Marty
What percentage of audiophiles use a sub ?
Incidentally,You don't want to measure the distortion in the bass on your (or any other) monitor. I'd direct you to any of the subwoofer forums, but the results might make you queasy. Suffice to say that even specialized 8" drivers tend to struggl...
What percentage of audiophiles use a sub ?
Tigg,Feel free to stop by (SoCal) and check the RTA in-room readout of a 20hz to 200hz sweep. You'll note that the system is flat to 25hz on axis at the listening chair. Could go lower, but no need for music. You'll also see that the system is +/-...
What percentage of audiophiles use a sub ?
A couple of folks have indicated that you should just improve your speakers rather than add subwoofers. The problem is: The physics of wave propogation at low frequencies (i.e. long wavelengths) suggest that these frequencies will usually remain sm...
Need help fast - Unbalanced Preamp to Balanced Amp
As Al indicates, not all balanced amps are equally balanced. My ARC VT-130SE will lose app. 1/2 of its output capability (per ARC's service dep't) if you merely use an adaptor. As I understand it, the lack of cancellation provided by the balanced ...
Vandy quatro vs Vandy 5’s
A slight variation on a common theme. For this delta in price, the 5s seem like a better idea. OTOH, both of these speakers bark up substantially the same tree and - to my ear- sound quite similar, so long as:the program material/room size does not...
