Most high-quality loudspeakers are 4-Ohms
Elviukai,WHat you said regarding relative sound of speakers with various impedances intuitively sounds right to me.So then can it practically be said which is higher quality? I do not think so. Different flavors will appeal to different people.The...
Most high-quality loudspeakers are 4-Ohms
"Most ss amps aren't at their best into 16 Ohms. "I'm operating under the assumption that a higher damping factor is in of itself a good thing, all other design factors aside.Of course we all know what happens when one assumes..... I suspect diffe...
Most high-quality loudspeakers are 4-Ohms
I suppose another way to look at it is that higher impedance speakers are a safer bet to be able to be driven properly with a wider range of amplifiers. So if you do not want to have to worry as much about matching an amp to speakers, 16 ohm speake...
Most high-quality loudspeakers are 4-Ohms
A lot of high quality speakers rated 6 or 8 ohms overall seem to have impedance curves that in fact go to 4 ohms or lower at lower frequencies in particular. I haven't counted so I don't know if most do, but a significant % certainly do.Of course ...
Tips on Buying Quiet Quality sounding LP's
I concur with Dougdeacon. USed classical multi-volume boxed sets are usually golden and very cost effective. I snatch them up whenever I find them for pennies a disc.
Lost that "Tube Magic". Can you help?
From what I have read, the Conrad Johnson tube gear comes to mind as modern gear that has the kind of character you described.Your statement that the Scott gear imparted a particular sound to various speakers is interesting. Surely some sounded be...

Elizabeth,I think I know what your saying about the Telefunken label and there may be other "less shiny" makes. Would you say that given a reference Telefunken in good shape for comparison, one in lesser condition still might still be determined b...

"So Mapman...what do you look for to determine good physical condition?."Good question. I'll try to relate:1) obvious scratches or other physical defects like warping or off center cutting (not so much dirt on the surface, which can be removed via...

Tvad's approach is a practical one. You are essentially relying on an expert to make the determination in advance for you on a title that you are interested in. That will work but will carry a cost premium of some sort which may or may not matter ...

For used lps, inspection by a trained eye is the best tool. With experience, you can train your eyes to quickly inspect vinyl and determine the condition. Most vintage records that appear to be in good physical condition should be reasonably quiet ...
The Hub: Want a Garrard idler-drive?
Back in the day when tables were abundant, the common consensus was that idler drive was an older and lesser drive mechanism compared to newer belt or direct drive tables. Was this wrong or has something changed to make these more desirable other t...
Are there any albums you consider perfect?
Time Passages - Al Stewart ... is solid from start to finish, pretty perfect for it's genre.
Help: Speakers to fill Exceptionallly Large Room?
"they were based on table radio speakers equalized so that their midrange was suppressed to the level of their treble and bass. "Didn't realize that. That is an innovative design! No wonder their sound was so unique and sought after by many!

Look for a pair of of used OHM Walsh 4s or 5s if you can find a pair local to pick up. They are big and heavy and tricky to ship safely. You probably want an amp that puts out at lest 80-100 watts or so though to really get them going.Smaller and ...
