Why are my cables balanced ?
I would just add that just because a component has balanced or "XLR" inputs and outputs, it doesn't necessarily mean the component has truly balanced circuitry. In fact, if I had to guess, I would say that the majority of components out there with...
best musical pre/pro for about 3000.
First I should say that I've not had a chance to audition very many preamps in this price range, but I'm currently using a BAT VK30SE. It's the best preamp I've ever heard at its price point. They can be found used for well under $3k. Good luck.
Vinne Accoustics Mahler to Levinson 335?
I'm not sure whether anyone would be able to give you specific recommendations unless they happened to own the exact same gear as you. However, two companies that seem to have garnered a lot of respect for good products at sane prices are Harmonic...
Fast Amplifier
No offense to the two previous posters, but let me try to answer you in less technical terms. Perhaps some will disagree with me here, but this is how I define it. Terms like "fast" and "quick" refer to a component's ability to reproduce the natur...
B&k Reference 30 Preamp
I am also interested in the Ref 30, but I recommend you hold off for a few months. The current Ref 30s do NOT have discrete 6.1 capability (DD EX and DTS ES). What they do have is a matrixed version of 6.1 ("Surround EX" and "THX EX") in which the...

Sellers Obligation To Respond
Sorry, but there's one more thing I must add--One of the best ways to tell a seller that you're not a serious buyer is to ask questions that are already clearly answered in the seller's ad. A serious buyer will at least take the time to read the a...
Sellers Obligation To Respond
There are a number of things that could be said about the way both buyers and sellers should conduct themselves in the negotiation process. I've considered posting here what I think might be a number of helpful guidelines to make the process of bu...
Digital vs Optical for DVD player
Check out the thread at this site titled "Why do digital cables sound different." It was posted on 12-15-00. There is debate (as you'll soon see...) as to whether digital cables make any difference at all. I'm of the opinion that, barring impedanc...
Why do digital cables sound different?
Dan, you've just asked the $60,000 question. There is debate, even among audiophiles, as to whether digital cables make any difference at all. For the longest time I was using an el-cheapo RCA wire that I think came with a VCR I had purchased. I d...
BAT VK500
Well, I've got to chip in my thumbs up for the BAT. Mine has the previously mentioned BAT/PAK. All the headroom you'll ever need, very transparent, and powerful bass. I've heard slightly better depth to the soundstage from the Pass Labs Aleph line...
Absolute Best DVD Player?
Sony has just released their latest flagship DVD player, the 9000ES. It retails for $1,500. It is supposed to have progressive outputs and be able to play SACD's. I've yet to audition one myself, but I've been pleased with other Sony ES components...
Talon Khorus vs. Peregrine
Thanks for the info, James. I'll try to find the thread you mentioned. Take care.
3-D Imaging: How??
I agree with Subaruguru that if your speakers are properly set up, the problem is with your equipment. Not that the equipment you're using isn't of high quality. However, some components have a deeper soundstage than others. If you're looking for ...
Preamp with deep soundstage suggestions
I've had good results with both the Threshold T2 and the BAT 30SE. Good luck.
