Looking for Better Jitter Reduction in a DAC
My experience with curing 'digititus' has been via multiple tweaks that addressed each of the various elements in the digital chain. It was cumulative. There was no one 'silver bullet'.   Most of the significant improvements were based on clea...
Looking for Better Jitter Reduction in a DAC
I think the attenuators may be a cheap way to test the analogue output of the DAC. I would really like to find a DAC that I could audition for a trial period, and in the meantime save for a new unit.As I stated earlier, the Cable Company's fee is ...
Looking for Better Jitter Reduction in a DAC
@willemj , thanks. Attenuators may be the easiest way to test this situation. And good point about analogue.I have season tix to the Philadelphia Orchestra and the brass section can definitely sound harsh at times, plus that is the nature of the t...
Questions from a Tube Preamp newbie
Yes, using a different tube type as cathode follower gives you an almost endless variation of sonics. Rogue responds very well to tube rolling and  there are many different 12AU7's.
Looking for Better Jitter Reduction in a DAC
@willemj , maybe I wasn’t clear about #4. The problem still exists when the preamp is out of the system (DAC direct to amp input). When using the amp gain control, music is very loud at about 11 or 12 o’clock on the dial, about 80 dB at listening ...
Looking for Better Jitter Reduction in a DAC
It is entirely possible that the harshness could be from the speakers. Tuner and TT sound fine, but are of course lower than 2.8V output gain. I'm using Gallo floorstanders; 88dB, 8 ohms, a benign impedance curve between 4 and 8 ohms. Gallo uses a...
Questions from a Tube Preamp newbie
I wouldn't use the term sparkle to describe the Brimars, I would say they have a nice amount of "air" in the highs, a very realistic sound. RCA Cleartops and Amperex have sparkle, meaning extended highs. Never tried JJs.
Looking for Better Jitter Reduction in a DAC
Here I am again asking for help to troubleshoot the "hard edge" produced by my DAC. Here's an update...I haven’t tried the iFi spdif ipurifier yet since I’m not convinced the problem is due to poor jitter control. I’m really sold on the HDMI (I2S...
Questions from a Tube Preamp newbie
@aberyclark , there's no rule that says that all four tubes need to be the same type. When I owned a Perseus Magnum, I had 2 RCA Blackplates in the front Gain position, and Mullards as Cathode Followers. The RCA's provided open, dynamic sonics, wh...
PS Audio PWT - cd transport
Toolbox, did you buy the PWT new, refurbished, or used? If you are planning to change the drive, you will likely void the warranty. My PWT is a refurbished unit and the transport was loud and often would not eject. I had the transport/drive replac...
HDMI cable for I2S
As auxinput said, i2s is a different interface than HDMI. But an HDMI cable is used to carry the clock signal separately from the data stream. The advantage is less jitter than SPDIF, which combines all data.
HDMI cable for I2S
That's a good idea, @jwpstayman since the PSA cable is discontinued...http://www.psaudio.com/forum/directstream-all-about-it/will-the-ac-12-hdmi-cable-be-offered-again/
What is the ideal volume setting?
I’m sure you realise that with classical there is minimal compression as compared to other CD’s. Much better dynamic range, so a soft passage can build to an extremely loud crescendo. And then the closely miked brass can kick in.So for me, I somet...
HDMI cable for I2S
I tried the Audioquest Cinnamon and Carbon. Didn’t like them; lack of clarity and detail, Cinnamon had poor low-end extension. Maybe try the Chocolate. (but I am using PWT to Nuwave DSD DAC so YMMV). I went with the Cardas based on user reviews. I...
Brimar vs Mullard cv4003/12AU7
I purchased my Brimars from Upscale after trading emails with them to get a thorough description of their sonics. They came in original NOS boxes with plastic pin protectors and are well built tubes. There are at least 4 different types of Mullards...
