$100 Speakers
the pioneers were designed by phil jones (acoustic energy, platinum audio, etc.) and got a big rave in stereophile, so i checked 'em out at best buy (admittedly not the optimal listening environment). they actually are very listenable, with a nice...
Comparing PSB, Paradigm and Revel - your thoughts?
psb synch and paradigm signature sound very similar to me, perhaps a function of their both being canucks who (i believe) share the government-sponsored r&d. i think of the psb as being very transparent, detailed, nuetral and, above all, balan...
beginner budget set up
look at the audioengine a2 powered speakers (don't know the airmotiv)--very good at around $200 + you'll always find a use for 'em. a dac with volume control like the xda1 is definitely a good budget way to go
Please help a noob
i agree with johnnyb53--there's good integrateds at this price point, but the parasound separates are on another level sonically and are very good values. for the price, you can't go wrong.
2012 Discoveries
my recent discoveries are dated, but there are no rules on the internet, so:1. cotton mather, kon tiki (2012 reissue of 1997 cd)--quite brilliant power pop with monster hooks and unusual depth. alternatively elvis costello-ish or beatlesque, but n...
Newbie Advice - New Amp Setup
i doubt there'd be a huge difference in s.q. you could also look for an hk 3485 (older model; will be a lot cheaper), which was a good unit. enjoy.
Newbie Advice - New Amp Setup
i'm sure the hk 3390 sounds fine, but the hk 3490 has more power and a lot more connectivity options (subwoofer out and preouts so you can use it as a power amp or preamp in the future) + a pretty good inboard dac in case you want to connect a com...
Newbie Advice - New Amp Setup
the cheapest route for you is to keep your nikko amp, which you like, and get a phono premap--you can find a serviceable pro-ject, cambridge, etc. for $60-100. on the other hand, if you want to stretch to $200-250 or so i'd look at a used harman k...
Best rock cover songs, list your favorites
Maybe I'm growing too cantakerous, but I find these Old, Musically Barren Rock Star Makes Covers Album exercises to be really dreary. Rod Stewart, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, even Glen freakin' Frey. Last really good one I hear was PinUps by David B...
Are there any albums you consider perfect?
donbagley, if you like califone (great band) check out their predecessor band red red meat---jimmywine majestic is a masterpeiece
Should I add a stereo preamp?
generally speaking a good standalone preamp will sound better than using your mainstream avr as a preamp. similarly (and perhaps to expand on rar1's point), you'll likely get better sound with good standalone dac than using the digital ins on your...
Disappointing Albums of 2012
good list notec. i no longer expect much from springsteen or neil young, but kathleen edwards really missed. i'd add the terrible lou reed metallica thing (sounded like spinal tap) and port of morrow by the once-great shins.
What’s hot in monitors from $2K to $3K in 2012?
guru qm10 legitimately get close to 30hz--very cool looking little speaker
why do we argue?
i have a mixed mind on the subject of forum censorship. on the one hand i loath the idea of online hall monitors/moderators and like charzo et. al. generally endorse the idea of letting boys be boys. on the other hand, some of us still harbor vagu...

marty, that's damn funny. my wedding processional was "chains", the carole king/little eva song, later covered badly by the beatles. agree with you on "patches" too--definitely the greatest bad song ever, with "billy, don't be a hero" a close cont...
