Hoodoo Gurus suggestion
2d mofi--the first two (stoneage and mars) are classics, the others less essential
Magnepan 3.7 or PSB Synchrony One?
i've got no dog in the hunt, but have auditioned and was very impressed with both (which, as above noted, really are different animals). the psbs to me were a great all-arounder with no discernible weaknesses--detailed, full range with seamless dr...
Best Song Intro
baba o riley--the whosweet jane (rock n roll animal version)--lou reed
What The Fidelity??
brianpack:1. keep in mind that most pro installers get a piece of whatever gear they sell you, so their advise is undoubtedly colored2. you don't give specifics about your room, use (movies, music), etc., but i'll assume you're shopping for a main...
Forgotten early New Wave...
i'm not sure the shoes are new wave--they're largely synth-free power poppers (who needs labels?)--but they really were great. surprisingly, they have a brand new record, ignition, which sounds almost as good as their classic 70s stuff. in the sam...
The best CD Player for the money
huh?
HT Receiver advice or look at newer integrated?
blandis, $550 is a bit more than i would spend on the 507, not because it's not intrinsically worth it, but because that's a lot of scratch for an older, non-hdmi unit and because the going ebay rate for the 505 (which i believe only differs by be...
Rory Gallagher Original Album Classics
ghosthouse, you're right and i'm wrong--fresh evidence came later. i was thinking of against the grain, which has "bought and sold" and "let me in"--yawzah. his later stuff was a bit more trad blooz. died too young.
Rory Gallagher Original Album Classics
i thought 70s stuff is his best--calling card, fresh evidence, top priority--it's aged remarkably well. i like that he didn't just rework the 12-bar form or slavishly ape chicago bluesmen, but actually wrote some very good, nuanced songs. supposed...
Whats the best vintage Yamaha amp to invest in?
the yamaha cr--xx20 series receiver is generally regarded as their classic--the subsequent cr-xx40 series are supposed to be sonically inferior and aren't as sought after. (their integrated amps of the same period go by the ca designation). i stil...
Diminishing Returns In A Hi-End Preamp/Processor?
interesting thread. if i understand the op's question, it's not whether a $7k levinson or cary will sound better than, say, a $1.5k onkyo; rather it's whether the sonic improvement is cost-effective. that, necessarily, is a very subjective determi...
New Music Recommendations 2012
just loaded most of the above on mog. best i've heard of late is the fresh & onlys, long slow dance--sorta 80s jangly guitar pop; i hear traces of the smiths and the poppier side of the church--distinctive vocals and good guitars with actual h...
Vintage Polk 10 b....2nd system, vinyl based...
terrific cheap speaker--the 10b are one of the few i own which i wouldn't consider replacing. ugly, lumpy things, but very well balanced and big sounding, with very rich midrange. "warmish" high end--they're not overly transparent; like bryhifi i ...
Old NAD or newer high powered Denon?
i really like that 3020, too--assuming you don't want to spend big bucks on a major upgrade, i think your idea to add a power amp is sound. maybe something like an 80s hk or nad, which you can find for a couple hundo. i'd also look at adding a dac...
Need speaker for a small space and close to wall
rega rs are designed to be placed near wall--vg speaker. moving up in class, paradigm signature seem to be largely impervious to placement and should work well for your configuration.
