The most haunting music you ever heard? to get slightly off track, my issue with daniel lanois is that he makes everyone sound exactly the same--whether it's dylan, emmylou harris, peter gabriel (hell, he even produced raffi), their records all have that hazy, gauzey sound that's sorta ...
Outdoor opinions? the big issue for me with oyutdoor speakers is they typically don't have much low end--maybe a function of cabinet design. the polk atrium series do pretty well with bass; the psbs also have good specs and would be worth hearing.
Anyone familiar with Pioneer HPM 100 speakers? $25 is a no-brainer. like mofi says, a big, bad, tons of fun rock and roll speaker--not the most detailed or transparent, but very dynamic and huge low end. going rate for these is $300-400, so you can always sell 'em if you don't like 'em.
singers similar to Lucinda Williams (mofi makes a great suggestion regarding a lw pandora station). i'd put kathleen edwarrds as her closest acolyte (and very near her equal). gillian welch and eilen jewel are also in the same neighborhood.
Top jazz trios piano, bass, drums on vinyl? i don't believe anyone mentioned the bad plus--purists will shudder since they're far removed from traditional piano jazz and tend to rock dynamics, but they're damn good. and available on vinyl.
Very small Integrated and speakers used you can get an emotiva xda dac-with volume control for $199 + (per yyz) some powered audioengine 2s for around $200 or less--should be a nice set up within your budget.
Sirius radio quality vs redbook cd player perhaps gratioutously, i'll add that although xm/sirius still advertise that they're "cd quality", they're not even close--they sound tinny and compressed even on great equipment. i'm inevitably surprised on the rare occassions i listen to fm at h...
Prog Rock 100% agree with bdgregory on porcupine tree--it's prog for people who don't like the wankery and excesses of prog. the main guy, steven wilson, also puts out albums in his own name which are very good.
Components that you regret parting with? mapman, valid point about my dentist--all i got out of the deal was a botched root canal.
Components that you regret parting with? von schweikert vr-1 monitors--traded 'em to my dimwit dentist. great sound and build quality, essentially full range; still my favorite under a grand.b&k avr 305--thought i needed hdmi and other such technofoolery, so i swapped it out for a de...
Should I buy PSB Image T6's for $800? good speaker--no real flaws. quite efficient, so your nova should drive 'em fine, and i'd expect it'll be a definite upgrade for you. msrp is $1199; i see 'em advertised new for $999, so $800 used registers as neither a great bargain nor a terribl...
Weak Bass from my SP 1/2s i had the sp 2/3s, which i drove with as much as 150w of good ss power. i could never coax sufficient bass out of 'em either and always felt a sub was essential.
Joseph Audio Pulsars i auditioned the pulsars recently with the new peachtree preamp and a pair of manley shrimp(s). they're very good--extremely fast, detailed and transparent. ruthlessly revealing--lousy recordings sound lousy. bass extension was not real deep (they...
Small wall-mount speaker recommendations? rega rs1 are within your budget and size criteria and sound very good--they work very wall at or near wall. also consider audioengine passive monitor (p4?)--surprisingly good for the price.
Genuine Basement tapes there's a 4cd version called tree with roots--usually available on ebay. |
