Bert Burns
i've been reading "here comes the night," by joel selvin; nominally a biography of bert berns, but more a look at the 50s/60s ny songwriter/production milieu (brill building, atlantic records, etc.). not great literature--there's not a lot of char...
Pass XA-30.5 and PSB Synchrony One
+1 lowrider. the pass may be "only" 30w, but i've heard it effortlessly drive some demanding speakers, including big wilsons and dynaudio contour, and i'd be surprised if it wasn't a good match with the psbs--it's a great amp.
Reliable cd changer for elderly music lover?
cd changers are becoming somewhat of a dinosaur, and to my knowledge most manufacturers have stopped making 'em, though i believe sony and onkyo still do. frankly, i'd buy a used one--they're really cheap on ebay. i've always like integra; if she ...
Best Cheap Speakers - New or Old
great thread; lots of really good nominees. among the ones mentioned, the energy 22 are seriously great (the more modern energy c-3 are also really good). i'll suggest a couple of others:kef coda 70 (extremely impressive for their size/price--they...
Movies that featured High End equipment
in one of my faves, "american psycho" the titular character has h/k 700 electronics and what i believe are kef speakers in his apartment (in the book, they're duntech). they gear actually plays a role in the film, which is classic.
PSB Tower Speakers - Amp Matching
feeling especially hard-hitting today, i'd agree with all of the above. psb speakers are voiced with nad gear and typically auditioned together; when i've heard 'em they definitely had a nice synergy. i also gotta validate schubert--i've had terri...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
not really my genre, but "benjamin booker" is very good--raw, loose blooznboogie. nothing groundbreaking, but the kid's a natural and has a real way with the big, melodic hook.
High End Audio Market Oppertunities
expanding on the responses above, i'm not sure that a genuinely all-inclusive product exists--i.e. one box which plays/rips cds, has hd storage, does wireless streaming/bluetooth and is an integrated amp. properly priced and designed, such an anim...
Wilco Fans / Solo Tweedy
just heard it on spotify--sounds like less-fleshed out wilco demos (not necessarily a bad thing, since i've generally liked tweedy in direct proportion to how little he adulterates his songs). melodies are strong, though would occasionally benefit...
What's your favorite lyric from a song?
my current fave:The weightlifter and a library tech you knowMade a big decision in the magazine rowI'll open my catalogue just enough to let you inAnd she'll drop beers like you drop vitamins"cathy's clown", by you am i
Integrated internet radio, cd player, USB, and amp
cambridge audio has such a combination, which is see on sale at spearit for $400. esoteric and others do the same thing but are much pricier.
Best Rock Album of 2014
a couple I've enjoyed this year:swans, to be kind; angel olson, burn no fire; real estate, atlas; fresh and onlys, house of spirits. also just heard ryan adams' punk ep, 1984, which i'm digging--sounds exactly like classic 80's sst buzzsaw rawk (h...
Have I Hit The Point Of Diminishing Returns?
this is one of those essentially unsolvable metaphysical queries with no right or wrong answers. i sort of agree with knghifi--where and whether one has hit the point of diminishing returns is ultimately up to the person writing the check. the way...
How to power down a Nuforce DAC-9 by remote?
get a smart strip power strip ($25 on amazon) and plug your receiver into the "control" outlet and your dac into a "switched" outlet. that way you can use your receiver remote to turn the dac on and off.
Bert Burns
i know of him through his affiliation with early van morrison, but just looked him up on wikipedia--didn't realize how many great classics he wrote--twist and shout, here comes the night, i want candy, cry to me, etc. etc. died very young, unfortu...
