Your favorite LP nobody has ever heard of
lots of great picks, though i'd agree that many aren't especially obscure (who needs rules, right?). a few more:love nut, bastards of melody--a power pop masterpiece with really big hooks and tight playing. great cover of "green tambourine". (the ...
Best rock bass player
sorry, rox. agree with your take 100%--he's a bouncy guy.
Your favorite LP nobody has ever heard of
it's an extreme longshot that anyone here has heard it, but i have an 80s lp by a band call sponsors (s/t) which is absolutely brilliant--ten tight, hooky sorta new wavy guitar power pop gems. from what little i've been able to glean, they were fr...
Best rock bass player
a couple not mentioned above whom i've always admired:graham maby (joe jackson, freedy johnson et al)--a really lyrical player who really frames some excellent-sounding records. i have a special weakness for him cause he also played with they migh...
Best beer
thanks, marty. since we're logrolling here, i agree with you wholeheartedly on the hop/malt balance thing--the trap i think many of these young gun microbrewers fall into is overamping the hops and/or alcohol to give their potions more "character"...
Speakers for Vintage Marantz ? Plus other Qs

Kanye West - Grammy comment, re Beck
fwiw, the pazz and job (national critics) poll had beck 16th; deangelo was first, followed by run the jewels (?), war on drugs and st. vincent. to arnettpartner's point, i think there's plenty of talent out there, but i agree the less of it is rea...
Kanye West - Grammy comment, re Beck
i can't comment on beyonce's music, which i haven't heard, and i agree with the general sentiment that kanye is an attention whore whose dis of beck is completely classless. however, i've always thought beck was a bit overrated--to me he's more cr...
CD Recorder Died - Best Replacement Option?
i used a philips cd765 for years--it was a very well-built piece which made great copies. easy to find used on ebay for $100 or less. if you must have a new unit, look at teac cdrw890, which is around $200 and looks pretty solid.
Attn Vinyl lovers - what CD Player do you use?
i was as skeptical as anyone, but the sony ps1 (currently around $20 on ebay) really does sound vinyl-like--there's some basis for all the hype. i stopped using mine because i felt silly fooling with the controller, but it was sonically impressive.
What's in your CDP tonight? the minority report
bark psychosis--hex (criminally underrecognized, electro newwavy postrock; in the same vein as talk talk)absolute grey--greenhouse
If you have ever bought anything from HSU research
like seemingly everyone else here, i've had only positive dealings with hsu, both in terms of product and service. i don't doubt that the op sincerely believes he's been wronged in some way by hsu, but you would think that given the op's stated le...
Rembering the 80s: College Rock
joy division was awesome--they influenced essentially every gothy/angsty/postpunky band in existence. they only had two real records, as i recall, but they still sound fantastic after thousands of listenings
Rembering the 80s: College Rock
glad this thread is revived--these 80s bands are what turned me from an admirer to a fanatic. sonic youth, meat puppets, husker du, windbreakers, thin white rope, lets active, comsat angels, lyres, neighborhoods, murmur-era rem, rain parade, and s...
Which used speakers $300 to $500 per pair?
among the ones you've listed, for rock and blues i'd opt for the vr2s first and then the psb golds. if you can get either for <$500 you'd be doing well.
