Whats playing on your system today?
one more holsapple reference, then i'll shut up forever---marty, you're probably onto golden palaminos "blast of silence"---for the unitiated it's a sorta supersession featuring among others, a very young matthew sweet and tbone burnett. the great...
Whats playing on your system today?
re: peter holsapple--i forgot about the continental drifters (his project with the girl from the cowsills!). "vermillion" was the one i remember as being noteworty. as for chris stamey, i useta wear the hell out of "wonderful life", "it's alright ...
Whats playing on your system today?
marty/ghost et al;peter holsapple in particular is one of the greatest under-recognized songwriters ever; cursed, unfortunately, by bad lungs--he's a non-singer. if you can, find his "out my way", a remarkably strong set of tunes which probably so...

motors, dancing the night away. one of the great lost classics of the 80s--swelling, tight  epic british rawk with that great lighter-lifting intro. i think cheap trick covered this.
Harman/Kardon Receiver
i'm also a big fan of the hk x30 series and still own a 730 and 330, having also owned the 930 and 430 at various points. i've read that unlike everyone else, hk used very little negative feedback in their designs, which resulted in less interface...
Home Theatre AVR recommendations (Anthem, NAD vs Denon, pioneer, marantz)
i agree that of your choices the anthem is a cut above, but if you do go with b&w, i'd look at rotel which is owned by the same company and is frequently paired/voiced with b&w
Neutral bookshelf speaker
as a frenchman, i'd think you'd look to focal, which sounds it meets your profile. dynaudio contour would be another to consider.
"Epic" compositions worth giving a spin
good thread--reminds me of the period after tommy where every technically-proficient band in england made their "concept albums." looking through some of the above-mentioned, it seems that most were more notable for their ambition than their liste...
"Cracked Rear View"
"bring the family" was his critical/commercial breakthru and is  very good, but my favorite was always "two bit monsters," which i believe to be one of the best-written singer-songwriter records of the 80s. much closer to new wave/pub-rock than to...
Headphone question
the couple i like in your range are the sennheiser momentum and the philips l1 (both come in on-ear and over-ear versions).
Which CD\SACD?
sort of on point, but have any oppo 103 owners notice that the volume level thru its analogue outs is significantly lower than thru its digital outs?
Just how great is Elvis Costello
for my money, the second or third best ever lyricist, and certainly among the top 20 songwriters. cursed with those pipes, he's a bad singer, tho he works hard to overcome with brains and technique. extra points for remaining listenable long past ...
PSB Platinum M2 buying advice
haven't researched the question, but i'd assume people pair them with a sub because as small monitors they're not designed to plumb the depths. in these parts, "home theater use" is elitist code for a sensibly priced product by a recognized manufa...

the beatles, rubber soul--good songwriting; quite underrated 60s popthe byrds, preflyte--rudimentary production values aside, indisputable proof of gene clark's singular geniuskinski, alpine static--hypnotic, intense instro rawk in roughly the sam...

really excellent speakers--extremely neutral and transparent. for a few hundred bucks i'd jump on 'em in a flash--they were 2 grand new (w/o the stands).
