Balancing time for music: Discovery/acquisition vs. listening
if, as you suggest, your main objective is to most efficiently discover music (as opposed to collecting discs, achieving the best possible sound, etc.), i'd opt for spotify premium--it has the largest library, excellent recommendation software and...
Thinking about Schweikert VR I
fantastic speaker--great low end and beuatifully made. relatively hard to find, which probably means their owners tend to keep them.
25 or 6 to 4 by Chicago. What does it mean?
joe crowe, you're better informed than me, so i appreciate your input. what i'm trying to convey is that unlike the excrable bs&t, the early chicago was kind of interesting and punk--the horns were sort of a disciplined counterpart to the wild...
25 or 6 to 4 by Chicago. What does it mean?
like most critics, i'd generally (and unfairly) dismissed chicago as aor drivel. however after listening to the steve wilson remaster i was curious enough to listen again to their first and third albums and was struck by how listenable they are. t...
Review: Bose 201 Series V
my peeve with bose is that they're ubiquitous in car audio and if (like me) you can't stand the bose system, you can't upgradeĀ  without spending megabucks on additional amps, signal processor, etc.--it's a proprietary closed system which doesn't l...
Help picking an amplifier
your mls don't look especially hard to drive, so any of your choices should work, but i'd opt for the parasound, which is hard to beat without spending a lot more. i'd probably start with a 3 channel amp, since you can always add another amp.
Tidal News RE: Sprint Acquires 33 Percent of Jay Z's Tidal for $200 Million
makes sense for all concerned. tidal was unlikely to ever show a profit as a free-standing enterprise and sprint needs content to compete/survive. i wonder if sprint will start discounting tidal to its subscribers, since that $19.99/mo. is a big i...
What's in your CDP tonight? the minority report
ron wood, i've got my own album to do. i literally haven't listened to this disc in 20 years, but was surprised at how almost-uniformly strong the songs were. "mystifies me", later covered by son volt, is something of a lost classic.
Whats on your turntable tonight?
i agree with bdp on the untitled-era byrds, and untitled is kind of a schizophrenic record--the live sides are vg, but the studio side (chestnut mare notwithstanding) is pretty spotty. its predecessors, "dr. byrd" and "easy rider" actually hold up...
Small form factor CDP?
look at the project maia, which has a really small form factor

Vincent SV-236MK
undoubtedly there are better amps than the vincent out there--the pass labs int are great--but you'd probably be looking at significantly more $$ for incremental improvement. i like unplugged's suggestion of upgrading the tubes.
Klipsch subwoofers...Any good?
i haven't heard the current reference series but at various times owned the ksw subs, which were kinda boomy/non-musical. (i still own an old mk volkswoofer, which is excellent), i'd agree that hsu, svs, etc. would be worth looking at

What do you think of soundbars compared to speakers?
a firend of mine has the yamaha yas203, which is <$400, and i was surprised at how immersive it was--seems to get very good reviews as well
