Mose Allison
his lyrics were very sharp, with a sort of angsty, rebellious edge--you can see where pete townsend took a lot of inspiration. allmusic also lists hendrix, elvis c. and lyle lovett as his followers, which seems correct.
Worth Upgrading Marantz 1504 AV Receiver with Power Amp?
i haven't heard your avr, tho it appears to be fairly modestly powered. although some mainstream avrs like nad have better amp sections than others, i personally haven't heard a mainstream avr which didn't benefit from external amping, and the nam...
Mose Allison
he wrote a good handful of classics (everybody's crying mercy, parchmans farm, young man blues, etc.), which is harder than you think in that genre. i saw him live twice, i think (once for sure with bonnie raitt) and he was just like you picture h...
Samsung buys Harman for $8B
from what i've read, the home audio business is an afterthought--the real target is inĀ  auto/connectivity--it sounds like the end goal is to integrate car systems with home security, appliances, etc. harmon is a bigger player in the car space than...
Worst record ever?
i recently heard "my favorite underwear" by liz phair, whose "exile in guyville" was a revered classic. it is unquestionably the most pandering execrable record ever made and is actually physically painful to listen to.
Seller asked for PayPal fees after the sale. Should I pay them or not?
i agree with the consensus that you shouldn't pay a previously-undisclosed cost. more fundamentally, i've always found it tacky for a seller to lay off paypal fees on a buyer, much as i would object to a merchant laying off credit card fees--paypa...
I NEED AN AMP!! BUT WHAT?? HELP PLEASE!!
i agree with the parasound and vincent recs--you can't go wrong with either
Dylan wins Nobel Prize in Literature
highway 61 may have been the zenith of his songwriting, but blonde on blonde has always been my bitch--for my money it's his best-sounding, best sung and most organic. it's nice to be discussing him in the context of an honor as opposed to an RIP.
Dylan wins Nobel Prize in Literature
really surprising, but well deserved. whatever you think of his body of work in musical terms, he's our greatest lyricist by a wide margin. i still enjoy reading his "lyrics-1962-1985," which work as poetry on their own terms.
Onkyo 809 receiver: using as preamp with Bryston amp
the vinyl is only going to sound as good as the phono pre-amp--i'm not sure how good the phono out on the onkyo is, but i'd guess that a separate 2 channel pre-amp with a high-quality phono section would sound better, especially with a high-qualit...
Sub woofer
i'm currently running my revel f30s with a ml depth and i'm very happy with the pairing. the ml is very fast and tight and gives some weight to the f30s, which are lean at the low end. haven't heard the f208s but surmise ithey'd have similar chara...
Speakers for Rotel RA1570 integrated
the rega rs1 are really good in a near-wall configuration. for a step-up, the paradigm signature 1.
Bill Chinook / Bruce Springsteen
at least when mr. trump is annointed we'll be able to discourse freely without fear of such rigid censorship
Bill Chinook / Bruce Springsteen
i'll agree with marty that his music started sucking post-BITUSA when he started trying to write major statements--i feel the same way about jackson browne and the much less gifted john mellencamp. he did get off a good one now and again after BIT...
worst sounding great lps
we were just talking on another thread about how bad-sounding springsteen's classic stuff was--just listened to born to run and have to agree. graham parker's "stick to me" was also terribly produced by nick lowe, who's own records are very well d...
