Which good CD transports can be found in the used market? for a $100 or less on ebay you can get an older arcam dv88 or dv78, which make very solid transports and actually sound good as players
Stay away from the nad my own experience matches most of the above posters--the pre-1990 nad stuff has been durable and reliable, while almost all of my post-1990 nad gear was problematic (though in fairness it sounded good when it was working).
best matching full range speakers for sx880 pioneer (60W rms per channel) polk model 10--a hundred bucks or so on ebay
Lesser known 2 way bookshelf Speakers from the 80's i just scored a pair of ads L470 mk2 for $5 at a yard sale and (bargain bias aside) i'm shocked at how good and modern they sound. likewise the ads L700, which i foolishly sold awhile ago.
Parasound HCA-1500 or alternative i own both the rotel 990 and several parasound hca and would opt for the parasound, which have more oomph and low end.
Pioneer sx-636 vintage reciever? i had the sx-737, which i believe is the same series/year, and it was freakishly good sounding, much more natural sounding than some of my pricier kenwood, sansui and marantz of the same era. i sold it on impulse to a friend and regretted doing so.
Outdoor Garage Speakers my partner runs some yamaha 570, which weren't much more than a hundred bucks, and i was surprised at how good they sound--more low end than most outdoor speakers + a very wide stage. i'm sure you can spend more and get better, but they were quite...
Your last concert was to see who and when? for my money, richard thompson's the greatest living guitarist, mindboggling on acoustic and just as good electric.
$500 (or less) CD players to mate w/ Marantz PM8004 & Vandersteen 2C i'd keep your cd player, which is old school but should do fine as a transport, and add a dac--something like a mf v-dac or cambridge dacmagic would be a noticeable uprgrade
What's in your CDP tonight? the minority report pernice brothers, "dimmest star" --one of the purtiest (and certainly saddest) songs of the last 20 years. chris whitley, "terra incognita"--a lot of this reccord drifts off into the ozone (i prefer his tighter acoustic stuff), but "weightless" is...
What's in your CDP tonight? the minority report notorious byrd brothers--their best by a margin, despite the near-absence of gene clark (who according to mcguinn did write the miscredited "get to you") and losing crosby halfway through (he supposedly felt slighted at the inclusion of the carole...
Whats on your turntable tonight? teenange fanclub, "i was beautiful when i was alive"--a really strange, brooding tune by their brooding guitarist, raymond mcginley, whose songs are less immediately grabbing than his bandmates', but are ultimately more interesting.the jam, "in th...
Tell Us about an Album That Took a Long Time to Grow on You surprisingly, it took me a while to grasp nirvana's nevermind--when i first heard it, it sounded overpolished and overtly commercial, as if to sanitize a punk band for mass consumption. i still have issues with the production (much preferring the ...
Finding a matching center channel wdouglas, i just saw this on ebay:http://www.ebay.com/itm/112418687334?ul_noapp=true
Finding a matching center channel i'm still using the cobalts in my bedroom system--as auxinput states, the cc800 pops up regularly on ebay (you can use the function which notifies you when one is listed). the cobalt line (which i've always liked) does have a different signature t... |
