Cart not parallel after Mint LP alignment?
By the way, I agree with Tvad's very first post: If the cantilever is indeed bent a bit then that accounts for the "problem" you note, which is not per se a problem in fact.
Cart not parallel after Mint LP alignment?
Dear vocalpoint, You might be interested to read the following post from Vinyl Asylum addressing just the question you are raising, whether you knew it or not:http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/vinyl/messages/90/901608.htmlThe post supports my recol...
Cart not parallel after Mint LP alignment?
I presume that you had your protractor specifically built for your turntable/tonearm. With that as a given, you ask, "Question: Is this non-parallel result in the headshell normal? It's making me think I may have a bent cantilever or something." I...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Dave, To me "negative" VTA means that your tonearm pivot point is slightly lower with respect to the headshell. Do we agree on the jargon? Is this in your Trans-fi tonearm?Halcro, Yes, my wife now regularly pops into the living room around midnigh...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
I guess there are two Lofgren alternatives (A and B), one of which is quite similar to Stevenson. So as Downunder says, that Lofgren would also "work" with vintage Japanese tonearms. (By "work", i mean you can align your cartridge with the grid on...
Glanz moving magnet cartridges
Dgob, I am so slow at this business of evaluation that thus far I have only got a feel for 3 cartridges: my own Grado TLZ (so-called because I bought it at least 20 years ago, and it was my one and only cartridge for several years), the Ortofon M2...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Raul and Halcro, Some would say that the very excellence of these relatively inexpensive cartridges when inserted into your top quality tonearms on your top quality turntables proves the supremacy of the arm or the turntable in determining the qua...
Glanz moving magnet cartridges
Dear Dgob,Sadly for me, I had never before heard of Glanz cartridges until you brought them into the discussion, and I have never seen one for sale since then. I take it these products were largely sold and used in Europe.I am not sure I hear the ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
But the point of my long-winded post was that in this particular case, where a tonearm designed for Stevenson geometry was set up with a protractor designed for Baerwald, I had to twist the cartridge in the headshell in order to make it line up wi...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Yep. Nearly all the vintage Japanese tonearms and/or turntables with dedicated tonearms do use the Stevenson geometry. However, I am not sure that using the Baerwald or Lofgren geometries with these tonearms will bring on the problems I experience...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Now that I have cleared up a problem aligning cartridges in my Dynavector tonearm, I need to return to all the MM/MIs I have thus far evaluated in it, because all of them were negatively affected by my previous method of alignment. (I used a Baerw...
want new plinth ideas for direct-drive turntables
Hiho, Thanks for your expertise in this area. The XR-Q7 looks like a Micro Seiki with only a label change. Since M-S is credited on Vintage Knob with the design and/or manufacture of many tonearms and turntables that do not carry the M-S name, I a...
tonearm for Gerrard or Lenco idler wheel turntable
I don't think you need to worry much about "matching" a tonearm to a turntable. The question is whether the turntable is "good enough" to merit a top line tonearm. I am a previous owner of a Lenco in Nantais plinth and the current owner of a Lenco...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Dave, So don't tap the headshell. What's the full name and source of that anti-resonant paint, again. I seem to have lost the reference. Thx.
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Thanks for reminding me about that vendor, Raul. I ordered mine from Garage a Records (2 days ago) and evidently got one of their last NOS ones at their low price. When I wrote my post above, I had forgotten about Needle Depot as another source fo...
