Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Dear Nandric, This particular Grace Ruby I bought from someone on eBay for a low price. The price was low, because it was completely lacking ANY cantilever, and of course therefore it lacked any stylus. By inspection, it appeared as if someone had...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Hi Tim, I do plan to call SS one of these days, after I gather a bit more information.Audpulse, I certainly will do as you suggest, mount the Grace LC in some other of my too many tonearms. But I had wondered whether someone here could point to th...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Fleib, Your revelations re-enforce my belief in subjective judgement.I have an issue for the group: About 6 months ago, I had a Grace Ruby re-tipped by SS using their top of the line LC stylus/ruby cantilever. I only started to audition it about a...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Fleib, You wrote, "maybe any tube on the input would have far too much capacitance for a MM anyway". Can you amplify (no pun intended) on that statement? Sure, tubes present a capacitive input because of the Miller effect, but since the beginning ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Fleib, I and Dave Garretson both own Atma-sphere MP1 preamplifiers. He and I have modified the phono gain stage, which uses a dual-differential cascode topology, such that the "bottom" element in the cascode is a dual-section bipolar transistor, a...
Collecting Blue Note Jazz
Phasecorrect, I agree, Pablo LPs are qualitatively excellent, only surpassed among jazz labels by ECM, on average. However, Pablo came late to the game of recording some of the great Blue Note artists. Most of them were past their prime, when they...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
Nice use of emoticons, Halcro. One emoticon is worth a thousand tears. My TT101 is working, if I leave it powered up at all times, and if I don't move it, and if I run it at least once a week. With those stipulations, it's "reliable". I have heard ...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
As Halcro and I know, there is NOTHING in turntable land quite as complex as a Victor TT101. I haven't seen a P3, but the Denon DP80, Kenwood L07D, Technics SP10 Mk2 and Mk3 are as simple as a belt-drive, by comparison to the TT101.
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
This guy Chris must be a gem, for sure. And by all means, Downunder, DO replace all the electrolytics in your P3. Like Albert says, you may save yourself a much thornier dilemma at some point in the future, if leaky caps eventually kill off an uno...
VPI SDS exact speed in .... 40 minutes?
Why hasn't anyone suggested belt slippage as the cause of this problem (and it IS a problem, not "normal")? I could envision that a high mass platter might slip the belt for several minutes at start-up, if the motor is relatively weak and the belt...
old verses new ???
There is no "correct" answer to your question, the way you posed it, except to say, as Czarivey already did, that vintage tt's are generally less expensive than new ones, and MUCH less expensive than the most expensive class of current production ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
"Diamond encrusted titanium cantilever."Sounds like something you'd give your girlfriend or a prize awarded on a daytime TV quiz show.Fleib, You really seem to have a good grasp on these concepts. I typically do understand what you're talking abou...
TECHNICS SL1200 MKII.......THE REAL FACTS
Techie, You are only allowed two exclamation points per post, plus one inappropriate question mark. Sorry.
Unbalanced to balanced VPI junction box change?
To get back to the original question, if the OP's existing single-ended Valhalla cable has only one conductor to carry signal plus a different kind or character of conductor to carry the ground side of an SE hook-up, then indeed he may want to cha...
Graham Phantom Anti-Skate. Is it effective at all?
I am surprised to read Don's and Doug's statements regarding anti-skate. If the reader is a neophyte, please take those statements with a smidgeon of skepticism. For any pivoted tonearm with stylus overhanging the spindle, there IS a skating force...
