Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously? Doron,I have always been curious about Joule OTLs, maybe because it's the only brand of OTL I've never owned or heard. I started with Futterman amplifiers in the 70s, owned many variants of the Futterman circuit, and now for the past 10-15 years h...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC? Follow-up: A Google search on "12AXT" brings up nada about any such device. I then tried searching on "12AXT tube", then "12AXT transistor", again with no result except a list of references to the "12AX7" vacuum tube that we all know about. Aud, w...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC? Dear Audie, Is the 12AXT a vacuum tube or a solid state device? (If it has no filament, it MUST be solid state, actually.) If the latter, do you know for a fact that it can be dropped in a 7C to replace the 12AT7s or the 12AX7s? (I forget which tu...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously? Fleib, RS-A1 is also surface mount with no fasteners to the TT plinth surface. Thus you can (all too easily) move it back and forth with respect to the spindle, if you want to fiddle with where on the LP surface you will achieve tangency. The savi...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously? Fleib, I fear we are still on different pages. I am talking about how to mount an RS-A1. To do so, you aim it at the spindle and let the stylus fall about 21mm short of reaching the spindle. It is my belief that thus you will obtain tangency somew...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC? Audpulse, So far as I know, the phono stage in the Marantz 7C in completely original form IS MM-ready. There was no such thing as an MC cartridge back in its day. It probably does develop higher than average gain compared to a typical modern MM ph...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously? Doron, I agree with the others, it's probably best not to run the motor without the platter installed. It's definitely taboo for nearly all other DD turntables, for sure. However, I faintly remember that Bill Thalmann told me that where the TT101 ...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously? Fleib, On 8/29 or thereabouts you wrote, "Lew,You mean 21mm short of the lead-out groove, which would be about 80mm from the spindle?" Then Hi-ho made some further comments to indicate that 76mm is correct. But if you guys will look at the diagram...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously? Fleib, another such arm that preceded the Rigid Float is the RS Labs RS-A1. As you say, it uses "under-hang" and thus achieves tangency at one point on the LP surface. Both of these arms are in the realm of the crazy, but I can say that the RS-A1 ...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously? Ditto to what Pryso says. Downunder, you might consider finding another "tech". The guy you quote is not very tech-y. As Pryso says, the reason to change out the electrolytics has nothing at all to do with sonics (unless a leaky cap is causing a s...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC? Pkoegz, Perhaps you have seen my posts several days back where I noted my (current) puzzlement as to how to judge my Grace Ruby cum SS OCL stylus. It had a promising first few hours in my system and then became and remains rather shrill and irrita...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC? Nandric, I think Halcro is indicating his agreement with Fleib, as regards the idea that both MMs and MCs can have merit, and cartridges should be evaluated on an individual basis, not based on their mechanism of action. I agree with Fleib, too
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC? "This could be because cutting lathe amplifiers almost never contain resistors that are accurate to 0.1%, or capacitors that are accurate to 0.5% (according to the LP cutting engineers that I have spoken with), this could be because the RIAA looku...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC? Will not raise VTF until I've spoken to Peter.Would in any case raise VTF by 0.1g increments from the present 1.6g.
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC? FWIW, I did play with VTA/SRA, to no obvious avail. There were slight differences but no real "cure" to the problem. The sound quality is a bit reminiscent of what happens with low VTF. So it might be worthwhile to try raising up to 2.0g. |
