SAT 30K+$$ TONEARM: W O R T H T O H A V E I T ?
cleeds, I agree with your citation of "underslung" or "underhung" tonearms as an example of why tracking angle error may not be such a big deal in determining the "distortion" produced during vinyl reproduction.  Because you're quite right, such t...
Who Is An Expert On Acutex Cartridges?
The 320 in all its variations was/is an induced magnet type.  If memory serves me, the 400 series (including the 420) were conventional MMs.  Probably different from the 300 series in sonic character.
SAT 30K+$$ TONEARM: W O R T H T O H A V E I T ?
Raul, If you will take a look on Vinyl Asylum, you will see that one of the inmates there plotted out the tracking distortion as a function of distance from the spindle.  You are correct that the inner groove distortion is very high, but the payof...
review iPhono 2
Mantis-Tobaggan,Congratulations are in order as you seem to have been successful in taking your audio system to heaven with you.  I hope to try that some day myself.  I have two systems, and I'd like to bring them both. You speak of the need to gro...
Who Is An Expert On Acutex Cartridges?
I don't know why Audiogon dredged up this thread to put it on top, since the last post was in October, 2008, but, under Raul's influence, I purchased both an Acutex LPM320STRIII and the snub-nosed predecessor, the 320STRIII.  Whoever said these we...
What is the preferred cartrige mm or mc and why
2channel8, In this day and age, there is almost no such thing as a non-replaceable stylus.  Such companies as SoundSmith, Expert Stylus, at least two others in the US and one other in Europe, can replace styli on any type cartridge you care to nam...
SAT 30K+$$ TONEARM: W O R T H T O H A V E I T ?
I wrote above, "In my opinion the SAT is probably not the  tonearm that is way overpriced."  I pecked that out on my cell phone; what I meant to say is, "In my opinion the SAT is probably not the ONLY tonearm that is way overpriced."  That's sort ...
SAT 30K+$$ TONEARM: W O R T H T O H A V E I T ?
I have no reason to take issue with Raul's fact based analysis. In my opinion the SAT is probably not the  tonearm that is way overpriced. I could site a few others that also strike me as being poorly designed and yet cost greater than $20,000. Ca...
Brand new to vinyl: Help!
thyname, A bit of icing is missing from your cake if you are trying to convert the single-ended output of your turntable into balanced mode for your Ayre.  The Ayre phono section will sound best when fed with a true balanced signal. This is not so...
Gonna have to ditch the Soundsmith Carmen II
If your problem reappears at some point in future, I would next consider the new tweeter, as per John Tracy's post.  It could be a little "hot" by nature or poorly matched to the midrange/woofer for efficiency.  (Meaning if the tweeter efficiency ...
New idler for Garrard 401
Do any of you fellows know anyone who has installed an Audiosilente idler on a Lenco L75?  Or do I have to be the first, even though my Lenco is mechanically silent as is? I bought it NOS and then changed the plinth (to slate) and the bearing (to ...
TT mats
As you may have read, I too use a Mat2 on my MK3, with no rubber in between.  There were a few who don't like the Mat2, which is their right of course.  I also do like the SAEC SS300 on the Mk3 and on my TT101.
TT mats
enginedr, I am inclined to go along with Chakster; I would dump the rubber mat.  But you have the luxury of choice and experimentation.  Try it with vs without the rubber.  Don't forget to change VTA accordingly.  I would be curious to know how th...
TT mats
Slaw, to the contrary, most all the posts ARE relevant to the OP's question.  Mostly the posts speak to the "why" part or to the sonic signature of one mat or another. From that it should be obvious that the mat makes a big difference in sonics. (...
