which turntable for the future?
A close friend just sold his top of the line Kronos, which I also like in principle, for the latest Monaco Grand Prix, and he’s very happy with the change. FWIW.
Help.... I'm scared to 'upgrade'!
If sgreg thinks I am pressing for the OP to spend big bucks, that is not at all the case. The OP himself talked about a $70K Swiss unit and then about a 13.5K Accuphase. IMO you can acquire superb phono stages for much less. But on the other hand,...
THE LITTLE BLACK BOX, 399.00 ABSOLUTLY NUTS
I wonder what happened to Autospec.  Anyway, Michael Percy Audio, an on-line business, can sell you the Cardas DIN plug.  I know he has the female inline connector half; he may also sell the male piece that normally resides up inside the tonearm v...
Help.... I'm scared to 'upgrade'!
IMO, you haven’t tried a really great phono stage yet, so it’s premature to conclude that the iFi Zen is some sort of giant killer. Most testimonials from other users would suggest that it’s not. It seems to be a good to very good phono stage “for...
The Sota Cosmos Vacuum Turntable
I do not care for detached motors and long belts either. But in the Cosmos is the motor sprung or unsprung (attached to the stationary substructure)? If the latter, it’s “detached”. You once mentioned that you were spending $18K or $19K on your C...
The Sota Cosmos Vacuum Turntable
Cost, with vs without the Schroeder? (I thought it was more than "10K".) Also, it’s fair to say that you have an unusual woodworking capability that enabled you to fix a problem which for most would have required a trip back to the factory. And yo...
Benz SLR Gullwing, not sensitive to loading?
In practice, I find what Atma-sphere says to be true as regards loading LOMCs at 47K ohms, although sometimes I slightly prefer lower values of load R just "because" I can imagine I hear a tiny difference. On the other hand, if you don't hear a pr...
Any experience with Sound Smith repairing stylus on non-Sound Smith cartridges?
Some months ago, JCarr, the creator of Lyra cartridges, for those who don't know, wrote a nice piece here wherein he suggested that when re-tipping a cartridge it is best to replace like with like, when it comes to the choice of cantilever materia...
Any experience with Sound Smith repairing stylus on non-Sound Smith cartridges?
I would guess that SS does more retipping of other brands than it does on its own cartridges. You will be hard pressed to find a negative review of their work. In my case, I had them redo a Grace Ruby with sapphire cantilever and OCL stylus. (Orig...
Could this be true, or am I getting the run around.?
Definitely a Poltergeist in your house. So it’s your fault.
What type of oil for a Platine Verdier
Verdier used to supply a particular bearing lubricant.  It's probably a good idea to stick with that. If Verdier no longer has a website, and if you are located in the USA, DeJaVu Audio in McLean, VA, may be able to help you out.
External phono stage for Luxman 509x
Sorry. Glad you're happy.
External phono stage for Luxman 509x
You haven’t even received the 509, let alone heard it’s phono section, and you’re already looking for an upgrade? Take a chill pill and listen to the 509 phono for a few months before collecting the opinions of strangers here.
Flag Doohickey to Indicate Status of Tonearm Lever
Put a small piece of red tape on the end of the cue lever. This will help you notice whether it’s up or down. After 20 or so years, you won’t need the red flag.
Advice needed on MC cartridges
Anyone who tells you that MC cartridges are categorically better than MM and MI cartridges is at least lacking in experience with a variety of cartridges. That’s the nicest way I can put it. Since I cannot agree to the inherent superiority of MC v...
