When is digital going to get the soul of music?
Both digital and analog have distortion. Neither will truly compare with live music. That said, there is a big difference between the distortion caused by analog, and that caused by digital. To grossly summarize it, there is actually more distorti...
Hey Audiogon how about a DIY/Horn section?
Being a horn guy, I would love to see this as well. I'm sure we could all learn something.
About your music collection
Sns, you bring up some interesting points. I know where you are coming from, but speaking as a professional musician, many of us fully realize that no sound reproduction equipment, not even the very best audiophile quality stuff, can equal the sou...
Used speakers for $3k? Oh the confusion
You can drive horns to ear-splitting levels if you are not careful, that's one reason why they are usually matched up with tubes. A friend drives a single Klipschorn in mono with an SET amp that puts out just half a watt. I am currently driving my...
Lack in harmonic richness
I certainly agree that audiophiles define alot of their terms differently, especially "bloom." "Neutrality" and "pace" also immediately come to mind. Viridian, you are certainly correct when stating that when electronic instruments (and sometimes ...
Used speakers for $3k? Oh the confusion
I must disagree with the previous poster that horns are out of your price range. In fact, many great used or new horn speakers can be had for half your figure or even less. I got my Klipsch Cornwall 2's here on audiogon for $600, for instance. The...
Lack in harmonic richness
Viridian, you must be listening to live music in some very dead venues, then...
Budget reference floorstanders for a b.r. system
I would agree that 3K is a realistic budget for floorstanders, assuming that we are talking new dynamic speakers. A favorite of mine in that category would be the ProAc Studio 140's. However, one can find great speakers used for 1K or under. I got...
How can we settle for digital?
I agree with Viridian. Too often on this site, people discuss sound instead of music. As he says, and I would add unfortunately, there are too many great recordings that are only on CD, so I did go ahead and buy a CD player, though I didn't spend ...
changing overall tone
What phono amp are you using? The rest of your system seems to be good products for the money. I would definitely agree that you should not be looking to wire to help make the system sound better. Audioquest is a respected brand.
Rega's T/T power supply: Is it worth the money?
That's interesting. All the dealers or Rega owners I have talked with have said that the P5 is a big step up from the P3, but the P7 is not much better, at least not for double the money of the P5. They recommend going all the way up to the P9 aft...
Planet or Apollo...worth the $ difference?
IMO, the Apollo is worth at least times what it costs. The best player I know of in it's price range, so yes, I would say it is certainly worth it. If you like your Planet, you will like the Apollo even better.
auditioning sessions vs. listening sessions
I think Detlof hits the nail on the head when he says that equipment must serve the music, not the other way around. Musicians often talk about their techniques being the slave of the music, and not the other way around. I would say that critical ...
auditioning sessions vs. listening sessions
A professional musician has a similar problem - we must make these kinds of distinctions all of the time. If I am listening to a recording of myself in particular, it becomes nearly impossible to keep these two kinds of listening separate. The ter...
Anyone NOT like the sound of VPI?
Johnnyb53, I would say that the problems you heard in the set-up you described are almost certainly due to either the amp or speakers, not the table and cartridge. I love the Rega tables, but I was very underwhelmed by their amps and speakers. Mad...
