Which of Mozart's No.39 & 41 CD should I get? Just heard that Claudio Abbado has recorded some of the Mozart symphonies that just came out. It is supposed to be very good, and he is certainly one of the finest conductors working today. Can't wait to check those out.
High efficiency speakers I would agree with the posters who say do not rule out horns. Horns are the perfect match up for tube amps of all types, and many of them have 100 dB or more efficiency. There are many horn speakers out there with great bass. Altec Lansing made so...
Looking for ACCURATE SPEED turntable/tonearm combo I can definitely recommend the Rega P5, with the separate power supply, which helps to keep that speed accurate, also Nottingham makes some fine tables in that price range. You can do much better than the Project tables for that money.
Rega's T/T power supply: Is it worth the money? I bought it along with my P5 - it makes a huge difference, enough to say that it is really almost a mandatory upgrade.
Time to change. But to what? We just had a good discussion of some of these issues on a different thread. I'll say again here that many of us professional orchestral musicians agree that still the best way to get as close as possible to the sound of a full orchestra in a good...
Best single-malt Scotch... I have to agree with all of the posters who said Lagavulin. I will have to try this Laphroig many of the Lagavulin lovers also mentioned, haven't had that one. For me, Lagavulin is far better than Oban, Talisker, Glenlivet, and MacCallen. It was t...
Buying used vs. New Guys, the most bewildering thing to me is that you both keep asserting that I am making a blanket statement. Rereading my last post alone, I count at least four times where I said that there are many exceptions to what is a very general rule. I am...
Buying used vs. New Tvad, I admit I am confused after reading your post. You say I need more education in what constitutes a market, and then the entire rest of your post agrees with what I have said in mine, just with different wording. You and I are saying the exac...
The disappearing $500 turntable The Rega P1 is quite a bit under $500, and I believe Music Hall still has at least one under that figure as well.
Buying used vs. New Actually Viridian, I would say that Tvad hits my point exactly when he says no buyer or seller can dictate price, "unless they are educated in the current market for their goods." I would actually go farther and say current, past, and expected fut...
CD players with volume control for $1.5-2k used You could get a used Rega Saturn in that price range, or a new Apollo for even less.
Help choosing a new cartridge It's difficult to find a moving coil in that price range, you usually have to spend more on those. However, some of the finest MM cartridges can be had for that price, or near there. I would suggest you go that route.
want to build a 2 channel system where do i start I would say that you could spend about half that amount and still get something that sounds fantastic - then you have alot more money left over for records, CD's, and live concert tickets.
CD player NOT made in China under $1,000? To answer the original question, I just bought a brand new Rega Apollo, which is 1100, and it blows away any other player I have ever heard, including ones that cost 5 times that. I haven't heard any above that level, I should add. What I like the...
Best next step to upgrade sound? For me, I will keep my audio and video systems separate, so I would say you should get different equipment entirely for two channel listening. The stuff made for video won't sound anywhere near as good as you can do in an audio only system, even f... |
