Beethoven Ninth Symphony I'm more partial to some of the older ones myself, but if you want an excellent performance on CD of an original instrument group, you cannot do better than John Eliot Gardiner's set.
Recommend Classical Piano LP's I like the Arrau Chopin recordings as well, and just found them all on LP not long ago. One of my very favorite pianists who I see no one has mentioned yet on this thread is Alicia deLarrocha. Wonderful Spanish pianist who had a very long career, ...
Buying used vs. New Yes, of course, there are certain items, particularly vintage ones like the Garrard and Thorens mentioned, where you will have to pay more, and it would be worth it to do so. And there are other exceptions that don't have anything to do with the a...
characteristics between these I'll put in a good word for the Hero, which I use. Don't know anything about the others, though. My personal theory is don't spend too much money on wire - you will not hear enough difference between a company's highest and lowest price products t...
Small room, "budget priced" speaker advice, please I didn't read through all of these responses to see if someone already recommended this, but my brother has a very small listening room, and he as a pair of used Sound Dynamics 300TI's, which he has mounted on stands. He gets very nice results wit...
Buying used vs. New I have a mix of used and new in my system, which is the first audiophile quality one I have put together. I have had good luck so far buying used equipment. I would say, however, that one should never pay more than half of the original retail pric...
Music Hall MMF 7.1 Turntable. Good choice? The Music Halls are a good lower budget table, but I would encourage you to try a Rega - you will get a much bigger soundstage in particular, which in my opinion is one of the most important things in trying to recreate that "live" sound. A few mo...
Anyone NOT like the sound of VPI? I am a Rega owner (P5) and would indeed describe them as being dark, especially in comparison to most American made tables I have heard. I would also agree with the Nottingham suggestion, though their famous "black background" perhaps takes a litt...
Suggestions for an effective record cleaning kit?? I would personally save the money and buy the cheapest, hand-turned Nitty Gritty. Also, I would recommend the Audio Intelligent fluids - I have had great results with them.
already looking to the future... I have found the Regas far superior to the Project tables. Have not heard the Clearaudio.
Looking for a entry level audiophile turntable You can't do better in that price range, new, than the Rega P5. Great soundstage!
Looking for good quality vintage speakers Your best bet to get vintage speakers at an affordable price on the used market is to go the Klipsch route - several different sizes to choose from. Altec Lansing also made some wonderful speakers, but these will cost you alot more.
Which of Mozart's No.39 & 41 CD should I get? If you like original instruments, or even if you don't, check out John Eliot Gardiner's English Baroque Soloists. Very good interpretations.
What is equal to the Rega Apollo for less money? Agree that nothing is equal to the Rega Apollo for less money, that's why I bought it. In fact, I would say there is nothing equal to it for about 5 times the money, except the Saturn.
Best all around speakers As I said in a different thread, by far the best type of music to use to test a speaker is classical, specifically full scale orchestral music, or perhaps even better, opera. This type of music places more demands on the speaker than any other typ... |
