When is digital going to get the soul of music? LOL Kijanki, funny last comment on your latest post. It is not necessarily that I want to convert everyone to my beliefs, in fact there is more good vinyl for me if they don't! I am just trying to explain my own point of view. As always, it depend...
When is digital going to get the soul of music? Frank, Kijanki, some very good questions. I'll do my best to answer them briefly. I'll start with Frank's discussion of playback at the recording site. I have had to record myself, or have a professional record me, more times than I care to count....
When is digital going to get the soul of music? Kijanki, you are correct that I was speaking of the recording process, and not the playback; you are also correct that most audiophiles will be much more concerned about the playback. My objection is much more to the process of digital recording a...
When is digital going to get the soul of music? Hi Fas42 - I want to respond to a couple of points you make: "distortion is distortion is distortion," and "A key indicator of digital working well is that there is no such thing as a bad recording, you can enjoy the "soul" of everything you have....
Harman-Kardon system question I used to have a HK receiver that had a channel go out, but in my case it was due to poor ventilation, and the prolonged overheating this caused continually in the unit. I kept the unit, in case I ever decide to use it in a home theater set-up, bu...
Bah Humbug-Bad Christmas Music If you like jazz, there is a great Blue Note compilation called Yule Struttin'. If you are a classical music fan, I can give lots of good recommendations.
Are my ears just fooling me? Didn't finish reading the thread after I saw that you could buy some Klipsch Cornwalls locally for only $700. Snag them!! Speaking as a professional orchestral musician/audiophile, I can honestly say that generally speaking, nothing I have ever he...
Phono Stage or TT upgrade If you like your Rega table, consider moving up the line, to either the P3-24, or the P5.
Tips for buying used Vinyl needed There is a wealth of great info here. One thing I am a little surprised no one has mentioned is the fingernail test for scratches on used LP's. Gently run your fingernail across the scratch - if you can feel it, you will certainly hear it, and do ...
Live vs. recorded Shadorne said "I suspect that many pop/rock bands simply cannot deliver the carefully crafted, dubbed and over-dubbed polished performances that you get on their overproduced studio productions. I also suspect there is some essence that is lost wh...
Do you listen alone or with guest s While the majority of my listening is done alone, I also often listen with my wife and with friends. And I would also disagree with the comment that it is only possibly to listen critically when alone. Being a professional musician, most of my fri...
How close to the real thing? Interesting thread. I agree with Mapman, Atmasphere, Shadorne, and Bryon. Certainly anyone who thinks that they could possibly reproduce the sound of a full symphony orchestra in their room and have it sound remotely close to how it does live is f...
Speakers that excel at depth/layering/space I agree with Dan_ed - horns. Pretty much any horn system will have those characteristics in spades. Among the dynamic speakers listed here, I also agree with the ProAc suggestion. I was about to purchase a pair of those at one point.
Suggestion for Brahms I would agree with those who suggest that the best performances on LP are not necessarily the ones with the best sonics. For instance, a great many orchestral musicians will tell you that one of the definitive performances of the four symphonies i...
Can I use EL34 tubes on KT88 amps? Does your manual say anything about alternative tube choices? Sometimes you can substitute, and sometimes you can't, I think it depends on the circuitry among other things. Perhaps you should contact Melody. |
