Hi Rok - I would add to Frogman's comments a funny story about a professor at a famous music school who taught a class for non-musicians on music appreciation. The course was also required for graduate level music ed students. She famously would b...

Rok, I think you may find that you have indeed heard the Soldier's Tale before. Many people have, without realizing it was Stravinsky they were listening to. It is a fantastic little work. Very difficult trumpet and violin parts in particular.
authentic space recordings
The Bernstein Carmen with Marilyn Horne in the title role comes as close as I think a recording could to duplicate such as large space as the Met.

Hi Rok - answers to your questions will vary widely according to the conductor involved. They control what happens in rehearsals. Ideally, a dress rehearsal of an opera is indeed a complete run-through, though depending on how close to the perform...

OK, after the distractions, are there any comments on my previous post?

Hi Frogman (and others following this) - wow, we are really getting down to it now! This last post of yours is very thought provoking indeed. First, I agree that there is no substantive disagreement, and really didn't think there was in the first ...
Just a bit to bright
You have some good suggestions here - I would add that if you don't want to consider tubes, try a Naim integrated. My brother went from an NAD to a Naim in his system, and loved it. And there is also that famous thread on another site where a whol...

Interesting and good comments from everyone - this is definitely the best thread this site has ever had. Acman - you mention Bowie's humor, which is undeniable, and speak of him quoting the tradition, as well as playing outside of it. I guess what...

I have just spent a very interesting hour reading the posts from yesterday and today and listening to the clips of Bowie, and thinking about all of it. I had never heard of Bowie, believe it or not, and quite frankly, don't care to ever again. As ...
Has education expanded your listening tastes?
Hi Rok - Frogman has answered your question nicely. There are quite a few who have gone from the orchestra to a solo career. Just in the horn world, Barry Tuckwell, Tom Bacon, and Eric Ruske immediately come to mind. James Galway in the flute worl...
Has education expanded your listening tastes?
Hi Rok - my comments were not actually directed at you, but such opinions have indeed been either stated or strongly implied from time to time in threads like these, and are even expressed by college music students, as Photon says. I agree with hi...

Wow - some very interesting posts since I have checked in. If I may ask Schubert something. I originally thought I knew exactly where you were coming from, but I am not at all sure anymore. Perhaps I am totally misunderstanding what you are trying...

Hi Rok - can't answer your question without hearing the takes. A "take" is one time through the piece straight through while recording. So what you have there are two different takes of the exact same piece from the same session, probably done bac...

Very interesting article, Frogman! Thanks for sharing that.
Has education expanded your listening tastes?
Lots more great posts since I have been able to check in. Rok, I am not sure whether your question was serious or not, but yes, Copland's book is about all music. Most of the examples come from classical music, some jazz, but it is applicable to a...
