Calling all Horn lovers
1. Extremely low distortion at the same SPL as other speaker types2. Very realistic dynamics at both the loud and soft ends, and the loud can be achieved with a very low powered amp, too3. Clarity, and great transient response, and accurate reprod...
Critique my system...
I agree with the poster who said don't mess with the cables unless they have an electrical problem. They will make the least amount of difference, in comparison to everything else you could change. If it were me, I would switch the preamp for a tu...
How to meaningfully audition speakers??
Hi Onhwy61 - everything in your last post is correct; there were indeed multi-track experiments in the analog era, especially in the opera world. However, what I am trying to say is that it was not done anywhere near as much as it has been in the ...
How to meaningfully audition speakers??
Hi Onhwy61 - your last post expresses exactly what I was saying. However, it is not just rock/pop recording that uses multi-miking and tracking - ALL modern recording does this, whether appropriate or not. There are very few exceptions, even in th...
It was 20 years ago today. . What was your system?
Cerwin Vega speakers, Technics table, Yamaha tape deck, Harmon Kardon receiver.
How to meaningfully audition speakers??
Some great things here - first, I knew that Frogman would write a much better response than mine, and I am pleased to see it does not conflict whatsoever with mine, either. Charles, I believe his post answers your next question to me, I think? Bif...
How to meaningfully audition speakers??
Hi Charles - your question has been touched on in a couple of different threads, including that jazz one. I think I'll let Frogman take a stab at it here if he likes, as he writes much better than I do. A short and flippant answer would be that al...

Hi Orpheus - I am back online now, and I have heard the Bennie Green clip you posted, from Glidin Along. I do like the music, however it unfortunately brings up one of my pet peeves in the recording of the brass instruments on many of these jazz a...

Hi guys - just wanted to let you all know that if I don't respond for a few days, it is because my internet has been sketchy lately, and we are upgrading from our DSL to something else, I think on Tuesday. I also won't be home much anyway. To resp...

Hi guys - just quickly listened once to Frogman's clip - I was not familiar with that band, very nice! I'll have to check out some more of their stuff. Orpheus, I had not heard Benny Green, seems from the two clips I listened to that he is a prett...

Rok, Charles, film noir is one of my favorite genres, for sure. I would like to mention a few more ladies one should not leave out of the conversation - Rita Hayworth, Lauren Bacall, Martha Vickers, Joan Bennett, Rhonda Fleming.
Amp recommendation for Klipsch Heresy
Though they are indeed efficient enough that you could drive them with almost anything, I would definitely choose tubes for sure. You have tons of great suggestions here. If he does want something newer, the PrimaLuna line works very well with the...

Hi Orpheus - I do not have nearly the collection of or familiarity with all the great jazz that is out there as the rest of you on this thread do, first of all. Probably only about 10-15% of my collection is jazz, another 5-10% spoken word recordi...
Old Cerwin Vega Model 210
I think that that is the same model my Dad has in his home - they are very nice. I used to have some floorstanding Cerwin Vega's before I got my Cornwall's. I always thought that Cerwin Vega was pretty much the best mid-fi speaker line.

Hi Orpheus - first, Frogman's post on the woodwind doublers is fantastic, as I knew it would be. One comment on your latest post - my comments on the great sightreaders were actually about the studio (movie) musicians in LA, not the Broadway pit m...
