need good minimalist preamp or headphone amp to actively drive woofers in a biamp setup
cleeds--would adding an active crossover, say an NHT X1 or X2, negate the need for an active preamp to increase the gain?
need good minimalist preamp or headphone amp to actively drive woofers in a biamp setup
Thanks for the responses.  cleeds2:   why would an active crossover be the right choice in my situation?  The speakers have built in crossovers and I paid a member here, years ago, to improve them with better parts.  I couldn't comment on what was...
need opinions on cdp with built in volume control up to $2000
Thanks for the input pehare.  That's kinda how I feel about tube amps that can run either in triode or UL.  I've never prefered triode as it gives up too much detail and just sounds muddy or opaque.  Thanks again.

soix----Your suggestion is a good one and I've considered it quite a bit.  I did recently try the EVS modified Gustard DAC X20, which the reviews touted as a giant killer.  I used an Upgrade Co modded Denon 3910 and an Oppo BDP 83SE as transports ...
cdp repair in Chicago
Looks like one of the recommended shops will pick up my players and take them in for repair.  Wish me better luck with this service center and thanks to all for the recommendations.
need opinions on cdp with built in volume control up to $2000
trelja---Looks like Deltronics in Chicago is going to pick up my players and (hopefully) fix them.  Both were having occasional problems playing discs, skipping or distorting on semi-rare occasion, with more problems occurring toward the end of so...
cdp repair in Chicago
I'll check with both shops.  I'm about 4 hours south of Chicago but I didn't want to risk shipping these beasts as Fed Ex hasn't been kind to my electronics lately so a personal delivery seemed safest.   Thanks for the options!
what can reasonably be expected of a seller?
akg_ca:  I am in agreement that feedback is essential when considering trusting a seller and I've passed on many items because of poor feedback.  But I very much differ with you on your first point.  You mention the PITA factor for opening a store...
Low Watt Solid State Amp
Gainclones/chip amps are another fine option.  I had the Audiosector integrated and the transparency & detail were strong points.  I later bought a DIY gainclone here on A'gon and it was even better.  There are several available presently, her...
I have been using the Cambridge 851 CD player for a few years and want more.
Just for the hell of it, why don't you try running the 851C directly into your amps and see what you think of the sound that way?
I have been using the Cambridge 851 CD player for a few years and want more.
I had an 851C for a while and originally sought it out based on the many positive reviews and, especially, for the built in volume control as I hate most preamps.  I was mostly pleased with it but found it just a bit lacking in detail compared to s...
Best monoblock amps for $2000 used
There's a nice pair of Consonance Cyber 800 monoblocks here on A'gon sold by Quest For Sound for $2200, modified AES/Cary six pack monoblocks on USAudiomart for $1500, Icon monoblocks also on USAudiomart for $2500, a pair of Cary SLM 100 on USAudi...
What makes you build a system around an amplifier?
I think I have a situation that fits your post.  Several years ago there was an ad here on A'gon selling a JAS Array 2.1 amplifier.  Trades were also considered and although I really liked my Monarchy SE-160 monoblocks, I was eager to try an all t...
Buying used/vintage Martin Logan speakers
Hi Mofimadness---I'm very surprised to hear about the panel reliability/durability.  My experience with the original Aerius was quite a bit shorter than that.  I'm not a smoker and the environment isn't particularly dusty nor humid.  Maybe I just ...
Looking for info on aftermarket fuses
Folkfreak,  no need to worry about warranties as I haven't bought "new" equipment in years.  I like newish used equipment as I hate the beating you take on the resale value.  Is this advice only applicable to the SR fuses or is this true of most o...
