Can we finally put Reel to Reel out of its misery? Put it to rest people.
Yes, R2R is inconvenient, expensive to maintain and repair, expensive to get high quality pre-recorded tape, expensive to buy blank tapes, etc., but, there is a reason for it sticking around--it offers superb sound.  The OP seems to favor cassette...
What is the best solid state amplifier you have ever heard?
It is hard for say what are the best amps I've heard, given the variability of setups, rooms, other components, etc., but, I can say I've hear some nice sounds from systems that used certain amps.  I've consistently heard nice sound from systems w...
Can we finally put Reel to Reel out of its misery? Put it to rest people.
At United Home Products, in Virginia, I heard several rebuilt and highly modified machines (they specialize in rebuilding Technics, Otari and Tascam machines).  They have some Tape Project pre-recorded tapes, but, their favorite use of tape machin...
Colorado-Based Manufacturers
Isn't Durand, the tonearm manufacturer, also in Colorado?
Used vs New vs Vintage vs Floorstanding vs Bookshelf vs ..... OMG!
As others have emphasized, you need to go out and hear a few candidates to get a better idea of your own preference.  It is also a good idea to hear different fundamental types, such as large planar speakers (e.g. Magnepan), omni-directional speak...
Name Your Top 5 Most Musical Dynamic Sounding Tonearms of All time?
It is tempting here to just name favorite arms, but, I don't know if it helps in terms of identifying ones that sound dynamic and musical.  I suspect that the terms "musical" and "dynamic" mean different things to different listeners, and any item...
GIP Laboratory
I have heard quite a few systems built around GIP drivers, although I have not heard their complete systems.  A local dealer uses GIP drivers in premium custom systems.  He has a fairly extensive collection of genuine Western Electric drivers, but...
Do You Remember Your First CD Player?
My first CDP was a Sonographe (Conrad Johnson codification of a Magnavox?Philips machine).  It worked flawlessly for me until I replaced it with a Sony SCD-1 SACD/CD player.
Take up drums at age 56?
Have at it, but, don't forget to protect your ears from excessively high sound levels.  I know a number of people who are drummers getting up in years and every one of them complains about hearing loss.
How do you know when tubes are done?
I have replacement sets of Western Electric 348a tubes (my stereo amp runs four of these at a time).  But, after many years of operation, two tubes started to go weak.  Although I have replacements, these tubes are so expensive, that I have, for n...
How do you know when tubes are done?
I agree that the best approach is to keep a new, or tested NOS, set of tubes to put into the amp for comparison purposes.  At some point, the tubes have to be changed, so it makes sense to buy the set now.  You could get "lucky" if the set you buy...
What a sad world we now live in.......
The last time I looked at data, the entire world sales (the dollar value) of recorded music is about 1/4 of what it was at the peak.  This is the case despite people buying and accessing much more music than ever before.  Theft through file sharin...
Do MC Cartridges Deteriorate over time
In theory, at least, the elastomers in the suspension can deteriorate over time, particularly if exposed to ozone and other such pollutants.  But, I've heard plenty of cartridges in the thirty year old range that sound fine and have not suffered f...
SUT or phono stage?
I generally like most of the SUT I've heard.  Stereophile's Art Dudley once said that he never met a SUT he didn't like, even when the particular model did not quite match the output of the cartridge or the source impedance of the cartridge.  I so...
SUT or phono stage?
I take it you have two phono  inputs into the McIntosh, one for MM and another for MC so that you can easily switch between the two using a selector. The McIntosh would be providing part of the gain and the equalization for both inputs, so the MM ...
