Phono Cable Breakin
I don’t believe there is a set length of time for burn in. If there was, it’d vary quite bit from model to model. I’m sure it can be anywhere from 2 to 200 hours. Also many people don’t believe there is a burn in time, but I’m not one of them! Put...
What sonic qualities connects to you deeply and emotionally?
It can be almost anything that's done well at the right moment.  Vocals, strings, percussion, a haunting flute.  Good vocals can be very moving, and there's something about a nice guitar solo that gets my attention.  I especially love the sound o...
"But it sounds better at night...."
alcohol. I was just about to type that I’m far more likely to have a beer at night, and looked up and saw your reply! It’s the best $5 improvement you can make. 😁 I also wonder if a darker room can contribute....the system usually sounds bette...
Is there a ceiling limit on what you are willing to pay for an audio component?
@recklesskelly   🤣 🤣
Is there a ceiling limit on what you are willing to pay for an audio component?
There’s definitely a limit....My audio budget has almost always been somewhere between limited to almost nothing. Much of my gear is used, modified, or built completely from the ground up. My current speakers cost close to $800 to build from scrat...
Speaker wire question?
If the wire quality is the same, there's no harm in using larger gauge....might even be some benefit.
need advise, which is the weakest link in my audio chain
Have you considered trying tube amps?
Danny Richie on loudspeaker design.
Danny definitely pushes for a higher performance level and is good for the consumers.  I think it’s great that he explains in easy to understand terms and educates people. He also exposes the parts quality used in most speakers for what they are ....
Question about wpc on tube amps
Depending on the specifics and the configuration of a given amp, tube amps tend to breakup much more gracefully so don't need as much headroom to avoid hard clipping.  I'm driving average efficiency speakers in a large well damped room with about...
How can you evaluate a system with highly processed music?
I suppose it depends on your objective.  Well recorded acoustic instruments and unprocessed vocals are a far better reference to evaluate a sound system IMHO, but it's best if you're actually familiar the sound of the instruments....not everyone h...
Thinking about selling my Vincent 737
Your weak point is your loudspeakers. The Klipsch RF8000s are OK but you can do better. I’d keep the Vincent, it’s a nice unit. Start shopping for something that sounds good to you. Upgrading your electronics won’t get you much for your money. ...
Which MM, MI, or Hi output...Nagaoka 300/500, Clearaudio Maestro, Soundsmith Carmen
The Nag 500 holds a special place for me, because at least on my system, it sounds like I’ve wanted all my other carts to sound. It’s full, dynamic, musical with natural sounding detail, and a pretty amazing sound stage. How it plays with your sys...
Don't sell your tube amps
Tube amplifier are on borrowed time due to a different threat. Its now possible to build solid state amps that are just as smooth in the mids and highs with no glare and the same sense of musical involvement. It seems as though I've heard this ...
Don't sell your tube amps
My tube amps are going strong and will remain for the foreseeable future.   I've even acquired a couple more in recent years, some as future projects, some working fine now.  Fortunately, I managed to re-tube everything currently in my system, all...
You've run some pretty fancy MC's, but the _______ MM cartridge really impressed me
The Nag MP500 has been superb, and is the best of the MM genre I've own or heard.
