Antiskating .... The last analog secret
I would like to add that the existance of skating forces, and their ill effects, are absolutely NOT in question! They are simple and Newtonian, and can be calculated and compensated for with reasonable accuracy . . . but getting it right in the re...
Speakers sound best facing wall????
Hi Waryn . . . what I'm trying to get an idea of is if your perception is based on some combination of the following:- sensitivity to an ultrasonic peak or diaphragm resonance in the speakers' tweeters - in this case I'd expect a soft-dome tweeter...
Speakers sound best facing wall????
Waryn, I find your observations very interesting . . . I am wondering . . .- Have you had similar experiences with headphones; that is, do you find most of them harsh and bright?- How do others find the sound of your system, now that you've reduce...
McIntosh amp opinions?
Dont do it.I agreee . . . you will find VERY, VERY few modifications done in this manner that aren't complete butchery of a nice amplifier. Resale value will go down as well.
sumiko pearl or ortofon 2m red
I had a Pearl many years ago, on a Thorens 280 for a second system . . . it had a nice sound, but I wasn't happy with its tracking ability. I haven't specifically tried a 2M Red, but I've had some time with a 2M Blue . . . and have owned/installed...
Using 2 integrateds to bi-amp?
It's the whole volume-control thing. Maybe stack the two integrateds on top of each other, and put a nice postal-sized rubber-band (or two) between the two volume knobs? It'd be nice if the knobs were the same diameter . . . :)
McIntosh amp opinions?
The 2205 was among McIntosh's first amplifiers that had true-complimentary output devices (NPN and PNP), and as such is IMO vastly superior (much less notch distortion) to their first-generation solid-state amps that had quasi-complimentary (all-N...
Telephones for Audiophiles?
Bang & Olufsen makes really, really nice telephones . . . I have several versions, including wired & cordless home phones, and the cell phone. They are a bit pricey, especially compared to all of the discount-store stuff. For the home, I ha...
Pioneer Elite M90 Woes
No, I'm not kidding . . . the Conductive Goo Phenomonon is commoner [sic] then one would think. Put your DMM on ohms, and you'll probably find a couple of lumps of the stuff that give you a reading of a couple megs . . . or even lower. It strikes m...
Basic electrical questions.
Maybe you are not familiar with Charles HansenOr maybe I am. I have read the work of, met in person, and/or had close working relationships with many brilliant people . . . most of whom I disagree with on one thing or another . . . in spite of the...
Basic electrical questions.
I'm mostly with Al on this one. The paper that Jea48 refers to is interesting and has some valid information, but there are also some typos and mistakes . . . and I think that some of his conclusions are a little questionable. With ANY of the Audi...
choice of midrange cap?
Also, what sonic complications are caused by say mixing a 25uf with a 15uf to make up 40uf since many manufacturers don't make 40's in certain compositions?None whatsoever, especially in a generic/general sense. Of course, I'm sure that out of the...
Why Transparent Cable? for Wilsons.... options?
I like the Transparent stuff, and the company - and they have close working relationship with Dave Wilson, and use Wilson speakers in their listening studio. So it's not suprising that there's a good synergy there. My experience with Transparent is...
Pioneer Elite M90 Woes
Wow, this a classic problem with these amps, and a fun one for this era of Japanese audio from many manufacturers . . . a bit of a blast from the past.During assembly, Pioneer used a white, gooey adhesive on the component side of the PC boards, ki...
JBL 4311B
There's absolutely no problem with using them with a modern amp, they'll be fine. For servicing of internals, and replacement of input connectors, you're correct in the sense that the woofer does come out . . . it's not glued per se, it's just REA...
