Maybe your turntable setup is actually okay . . .
Viridian, I don't quite understand your answer . . . but with any craft, one of the best tests of workmanship is when the job is "done", and something clearly, obviously still isn't right. A craftsman's response is usually one of three responses:1...
How is it ? that a tuner smokes the table ???
Many of these comments seem to be based on the assumption that "there's no way that a radio station's gear is better than mine" . . . pure audiophile snobbery. I agree that the vast, vast majority of FM stations sound like pure dog-crap. But it's ...
How is it ? that a tuner smokes the table ???
Why is it a problem that his tuner sounds so good?? It seems that we've all forgotten that in the days when vinyl was all there was, there were also a great deal more diversity in FM radio programming . . . and a high-quality FM tuner was very muc...
Stylus for Garrard 44 MK II ?
It would be best to replace the entire cartridge -- older Shure stylii come in myriad forms that look very similar, but don't necessarily interchange. They still have many of the traditional clunky-looking MMs that will drop right in place (M44?)....
Linn LP 12
I don't see why not . . . they're all separate SKUs, and ship in separate boxes. Linn has always felt strongly about their dealers not simply pushing boxes out the door, and maybe some dealers wouldn't be comfortable selling you JUST the turntable...
5.1 vs 7.1
This is a great example of where quality trumps quantity every time.I've set up some viewing rooms that, given the configuration of seating positions, having four speakers in the back was nice . . . this mainly made it possible to get more consist...
Electrical Dummy's Turntable Question...
There's no way to know from an objective standpoint . . . this depends on the design of the grounding wires and traces inside both your receiver and the phono preamp, and the resistance of the ground conductors in your interconnects and their conn...
Is EAC compatible with Windows Vista

Dedicated Circuit with Two Prong Plug?
IIRC, the MR71 has a line-to-ground capacitor from each of the AC line, and a high-value resistor (4.7 Meg?) from one side of the AC line to ground as well. I've never understood exactly what the thinking was for the resistor . . . but all of this...
The Economy.. will hi end audio mfgs lower prices?
When I read these threads, I sometimes get the impression that many don't have a good idea of some of the basic cost/margin structures of consumer electronics goods. For starters, the cost and market dynamics are very different between mass-market ...
Cartridge fresh out of the box
Mekong56 is correct, fine tuning the azimuth affects the channel SEPARATION, not the channel BALANCE. Unless of course, we're talking about something like a tilt of 20 degrees . . .Provided that there are no problems with connections and wiring (q...
advice re: hum and passive distribution bars.
Yes, a voltmeter comes with two probes . . . and you can get the cheapest of the cheap, analog voltmeter to perform this check. It's very unlikely that you have any isolated grounds if you didn't specifically ask for them. Also, all of the grounds ...
advice re: hum and passive distribution bars.
Okay, this sounds much more likely to be on the same phase . . . but maybe you still want to check to be sure.If they are indeed on the same phase, then the problem is likely to be caused by the ground resistance between the two circuits. Are they...
advice re: hum and passive distribution bars.
I don't know how your particular electrical panel is numbered, but if the two breakers for your stereo circuits are physically right next to each other and in the same column, they are almost certainly on OPPOSITE phases, not on the same one. This...
ampllifier design
I likewise have good associations with the 6CG7, it's the long-tailed-pair phase-inverter tube in my Marantz model 2s . . . it's used effectively for this role in the 5 & 8 as well, and as a cathode-follower in the 9.But if you're using EL84s ...
